Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) has been plagued by graft and controversy in recent years. A Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) study revealed that the company suffered a revenue loss of at least ৳2,000 crore in the last six years due to corruption.

Tampering with international call records was identified as one of the major corrupted areas by TIB. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) also found evidence of embezzlement, approving the filing of four cases against 22 people, including BTCL's Managing Director SOM Kalim Ullah and three former managing directors.

BTCL's Managing Director SOM Kalim Ullah and the other accused individuals will face charges of embezzling over ৳5.75bn through illegal Voice over Internet Protocol business. The ACC officials stated that the BTCL officials in connivance with Ericsson Bangladesh Ltd embezzled the money by erasing incoming international call minutes from call detail records.

The controversy surrounding BTCL has also led to the disconnection of a British firm, Zamir Telecom, from the Bangladesh network despite a court order to reconnect. BTCL's telecoms minister, Abdul Latif Siddique, admitted to giving the order for the disconnection, which was in breach of a 2010 court order.
