Upgrading to Wi-Fi over Coax can breathe new life into your home network. This upgrade is a game-changer for those with existing coaxial cables.

Coaxial cables can be easily integrated into a Wi-Fi network, making it a convenient option for those who already have the necessary infrastructure in place.

Older homes often have coaxial cables installed, which can be repurposed for a Wi-Fi network, eliminating the need for new cable installations.

MoCA Technology

MoCA Technology is a game-changer for home networks.

MoCA beats out standard mesh WiFi in terms of quality and reliability, especially for gamers who need a stable signal with quick response time.

Standard mesh WiFi networks have higher latency than wired networks, including MoCA, which can cause delays and signal interruption.

A WiFi Network Extender with MoCA uses a wired connection to your router through a home's existing coaxial wiring, creating a super-fast backhaul while saving all the Wi-Fi bandwidth for your mobile devices.

This setup provides a reliable, superhighway for your WiFi traffic without dead zones.

For a reliable home network, look into a WiFi Network Extender with MoCA or MoCA Network Adapters if your home has coaxial wiring.

MoCA Network Adapters or WiFi Extenders can make your home network much more reliable and get speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps.

The ECB7250 MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter delivers next-generation speeds up to 2.5 Gbps using your home's existing coaxial wires.

Installation and Supplies

To set up Wi-Fi over Coax, you'll need a few specific supplies. ActionTek 2.5 Moca adapters are a key component, and you'll also need an Eero Wifi system, such as an older generation Eero.

The Eero Wifi system is a great choice because each device has two ethernet ports, which can be used to connect devices like a PS4 or TV via cable. A COAX Splitter is also necessary, and if you already have one installed in your home, you're all set.

Just connect the coaxial cable to one side of the Moca adapter and the ethernet cable to the other, and power it up – it's a simple process that works like a charm.

Wi-Fi over Coax allows client devices at various antenna locations to connect to a single network, with fronthaul via cabling runs between the distributed antennas and a baseband Wi-Fi radio on an access point.

This setup enables seamless native handoffs, as no key negotiation or processing is necessary between the access point and a client device when roaming between antennas.

A single access point is used in a Wi-Fi over Coax deployment, which reduces wireless transmission and interference, resulting in greater use of channel capacity and greater throughput.

Dual-band WLAN channels can be transmitted over coaxial cabling, but diplexers may be required for concurrent use with other frequencies, such as those supported by MoCA products.

Supplies

To set up a reliable home network, you'll need the right supplies. ActionTek 2.5 Moca adapters are a great starting point, allowing you to extend your network with ease.

These adapters are plug-and-play, making them perfect for non-techies. Simply connect the coaxial cable on one side and the ethernet cable on the other, and you're good to go.

Eero Wifi is another essential item, offering fast and reliable connectivity. Each device has two ethernet ports, which can be used to connect wired devices like your PS4 or TV.

A COAX Splitter is also necessary, but you might already have one installed in your home like I did.

Install MoCA 2.5 Adaptors

To install MoCA 2.5 adaptors, you'll need to place them in strategic locations around your home.

The first step is to install the adaptors in the rooms where you want to extend your coverage. I installed mine in the basement and two other rooms that I wanted to cover.

Each MoCA 2.5 adaptor has two ethernet ports, which can be used to connect devices like your PS4 or TV. You can also use them to create a wired backbone for your eero devices.

A COAX Splitter is also required for the installation process. If you already have one installed in your home, you can use it.

Improving Coverage and Performance

Wi-Fi over Coax can increase WiFi coverage beyond what's possible with WiFi over the air alone.

By avoiding signal attenuation caused by obstructions and free-space path loss, Wi-Fi over Coax can increase Wi-Fi coverage.

The idea is simple: use a router with detachable antennas connected to the house's coax lines to improve WiFi signal strength.

A WiFi over coax kit from Coaxifi for around $10 can help you stay on the same SSID and improve WiFi signal strength.

Using a WiFi over coax kit, you can see significant improvements in WiFi power reaching far-flung areas of your home.

With Coaxifi, I was able to boost the link rate from 520 Mbps to 866 Mbps in my study, reflecting an increase from 64-QAM 2/3 to 256-QAM 5/6.

The doorbell streams footage 100% of the time now, and my smartphone loads pages much faster in that part of the house.

Maximum range via Wi-Fi over coax varies based on several factors, including transmit power of the access point radio chain and the type and length of the cabling run.

Here's a rough guide to maximum range via Wi-Fi over coax, based on some examples mentioned in the article:

Keep in mind that these are rough estimates, and actual performance may vary depending on your specific setup.
