The Starlink satellite internet system is designed to provide global internet connectivity, with the goal of bridging the digital divide.
Each Starlink terminal is equipped with a phased array antenna that can track multiple satellites simultaneously, providing continuous internet connectivity.
This innovative technology enables users to access high-speed internet from anywhere, even in remote or underserved areas.
With the ability to track multiple satellites, Starlink terminals can maintain a strong internet connection even when moving or in areas with limited coverage.
What Is Starlink?
Starlink is a constellation of satellites that aims to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband internet across the globe.
The system is particularly useful in regions where conventional internet connection is unfeasible, such as rural areas.
The Starlink system consists of over 2,000 satellites deployed since 2018, with tens of thousands more planned.
The Starlink kit comes with a terminal that can withstand extreme temperatures and conditions, including heat, cold, wind, snow, rain, and hail.

The terminal is 19 inches long and 12 inches wide, and looks like a white satellite dish.
It's designed to be easy to set up, with instructions as simple as "Plug in socket. Point at sky."
According to Elon Musk, the terminal has motors to self-adjust its optimal angle to view the sky.
The Starlink system already comes connected to the internet, making the set-up procedure straightforward.
Currently, the system is available in several countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Australia.

Civilian Use and Incidents
Starlink terminals have been used by Ukrainian civilians in emergency and damaged regions with no good internet coverage, despite being expensive by Ukrainian standards.
In February 2022, Starlink activated its service in Ukraine and waived the usual monthly subscription fee for the country. Ukrainian regulators allowed Starlink to be used by anyone, including ordinary citizens and businesses.
The service has been particularly useful for journalists, resistance groups, and the elected government. Civilians in war-torn areas could gather in "points of invincibility" where they had access to internet provided by Starlink terminals.
By April 2022, Starlink was officially registered and the Ukrainian government relied on it for various communication needs. Starlink was used to transmit the President Zelenskyy's broadcast and communication between Ukrainian mobile operators.
In May 2022, 150,000 people were using the system every day.

SpaceX Achieves 1 Million User Terminals

SpaceX has achieved a major milestone by manufacturing 1 million Starlink user terminals, which is an impressive feat given that the company has only been selling its service for around 19 months.
The user terminals consist of a phased array antenna and Wi-Fi router device that enables wireless connection to the internet. The antenna is around the size of a pizza box and features communication technology more advanced than what is onboard military fighter jets.
SpaceX's manufacturing facility in Redmond, Washington has significantly ramped up production, going from 5,000 user antennas per week in 2021 to 20,000 per week this year. That's a huge increase in just a few years.
The Starlink user antenna for residential use is priced at $599 USD with a monthly internet subscription fee of $110 USD. This makes it an affordable option for many people who want to access high-speed internet.
SpaceX's Starlink service is now available across all seven continents in 43 countries, as shown on their Starlink Coverage Map.

Civilian Use

In February 2022, Starlink activated their service in Ukraine just two days after it was requested, waiving the usual monthly subscription fee for the country.
Civilians in Ukraine have relied heavily on Starlink for internet access, especially in emergency and damaged regions with no good internet coverage. Despite being expensive by Ukrainian standards, the service has been a lifeline for many.
Starlink's personal connectivity hotspot has been particularly useful for journalists, resistance groups, and the elected government in Ukraine. It's allowed them to stay connected with the outside world.
By April 2022, Starlink was officially registered, and the Ukrainian government relied on it for various communication needs. This included transmitting the President's broadcast and communication between Ukrainian mobile operators.
In October 2022, most towns on the Ukrainian front lines had at least one or two Starlink terminals, providing a public Wi-Fi network for civilians to connect to. This has been a game-changer for people living in these areas.
By May 2022, 150,000 people were using the Starlink system every day. This is a testament to the service's importance in Ukraine.
Starlink has been used to run critical infrastructure like schools, hospitals, and energy facilities. It's also been used to support the sowing season and plan evacuations.

Incident

In September 2022, a Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicle with a Starlink terminal washed up in Sevastopol, Crimea.
The sensors on the front of the naval drone could be used as a laser range finder to help in targeting.
Ukrainian drone boats strapped with explosives attempted a sneak attack on the Russian fleet in Sevastopol using Starlink to guide them to target.
The attack was the first of its kind, and Ukraine requested Musk to enable Starlink up to Crimea, but he declined the request.
Several drone boats lost connectivity and washed ashore without exploding, while others sank in the sea or self-destructed on the way to the bay.
Only two drone boats returned to the Ukrainian base undamaged, providing valuable information on communication, navigation, and hull.
The Ukrainian team was cut off from their vessels when Elon Musk switched off Starlink, which they used to control the drones.
A successful drone attack on the Sevastopol Naval base in Crimea was launched a month later, using seven similar black naval drones.
