The Pixel 9 Gemini is shaping up to be a powerhouse of a phone. It's got a 6.7-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, making it perfect for gaming and video watching.

The camera system is one of the most impressive features, with a quad-camera setup that includes a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP telephoto lens, and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens. It's also got a 108MP front camera for stunning selfies.

One of the standout features of the Pixel 9 Gemini is its fast charging capabilities, with support for up to 30W fast charging. This means you can get a full day's worth of battery life in just 30 minutes.

Pixel 9 Gemini Features

With the Pixel 9, you get access to a year's worth of advanced Gemini features, including AI-infused editing capabilities like "Add Me" group photos and Auto frame for different ratios.

Google's AI is the frontrunner in asking you how much realism and imperfection you want in your personal photos, and it's soon to be followed by Apple's AI.

One of the best summaries of Gemini's usefulness comes from the author's Gemini Live chat about it, where they mention improved productivity.

Gemini AI helps you get things done more efficiently, though the exact capabilities aren't yet fully detailed.

Buying a Pixel 9 Pro or Pro XL or Pro Fold means getting a year's access to the most advanced version of Gemini, currently priced at $20 per month.

The free year deal runs through the fall of 2025, so the longer you wait, the better version of Gemini you get.

Gemini Live offers two new icons at the bottom of the screen – a camera icon and a screen share icon.

Tap the camera icon and Gemini switches to a camera mode, showing you video of what your phone is looking at, but the Gemini Live icons remain at the bottom of the screen.

You can keep using your phone and talking to Gemini at the same time, so you could ask it, "What am I looking at?", and it will describe what's on your phone screen.

It's pretty impressive, and having it all inside the Gemini app is way more convenient.

Gemini can’t use Google search while going live, so for now it’s great for brainstorming, chatting, coming up with ideas, or simply identifying what you’re looking at.

Gemini can identify objects on your desk, like a water bottle, a magazine, and a laptop, and can even tell you about them.

It can also identify landmarks and tell you where you are, like the author's experience when they pointed the phone at a car park and asked Gemini which city they were in.

Hands-On Experience

I was excited to try out the new Gemini Astra capabilities on my Google Pixel 9. I tapped the camera icon and Gemini switched to a camera mode, showing me video of what my phone was looking at.

Gemini can't use Google search while going live, so it's great for brainstorming, chatting, coming up with ideas, or simply identifying what you're looking at. I pointed the phone at the window towards a fairly nondescript car park and asked Gemini which city I was in, and it instantly, and correctly, told me it was Bath, UK.

You can keep using your phone and talking to Gemini at the same time, so you could ask it, "What am I looking at?", and it will describe what's on your phone screen. I tested Gemini Live with a few objects on my desk – a water bottle, a magazine, and a laptop, all of which it identified correctly.

One thing Gemini can't do is interact with your phone in any way, so if you ask it to take you to the Bluetooth settings it can't do it, but it will tell you what to tap to get you there.

All three phones offer 24+ hours of battery life with support for 45W fast charging (55% in 30 minutes) and fast wireless charging.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL takes the price up to $1,099, but you'll get more storage and advanced AI features.

As a consolation, you'll get a year of free access to Gemini Advanced via a Google One AI Premium Plan, normally worth $20/month.
