Superbird 9 Development

In March 2021, SKY Perfect JSAT selected Airbus to build the Superbird-9 satellite based on the OneSat product line.

Airbus will provide a turnkey solution, including the design and manufacture of the Superbird-9 spacecraft, associated services, and support for in-orbit operations and ground segment.

The contract marks the first time a Japanese telecommunications operator has ordered a satellite from Europe, making it a landmark contract for Airbus in Japan.

Superbird-9 will be the seventh software-defined OneSat satellite ordered by Airbus, and it will deliver powerful performance and a groundbreaking experience for SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation customers.

The satellite will be based on Airbus' standardized OneSat product line, which will allow SKY Perfect JSAT to replace a key broadcasting mission and deliver fully flexible HTS services.

SKY Perfect JSAT estimates the total investment, including this contract, to be around 30 billion yen.

The satellite will bring day-to-day flexibility to the SKY Perfect JSAT fleet, enabling payload missions to be configured, adapted, and combined to perfectly match end-user needs.

Superbird-9 will primarily serve Japan and Eastern Asia, delivering broadcast and broadband missions in Ku band.

Airbus will also provide an advanced digital suite to manage the digital payload and operate the end-to-end satellite resources.

The satellite is planned to start its service in fiscal year 2024 and has highly flexible digital technology on board with rich and variable Ku-band coverage over East-Asian countries.
