iMessages read receipts are a feature that lets you know when someone has read your messages. This feature is turned on by default.

iMessages read receipts are not the same as delivery receipts, which show when your message was delivered to the recipient's device. They also don't mean the recipient has responded to your message.

If you're concerned about someone seeing when you've read their messages, you can turn off read receipts in your iMessage settings.

Turning Receipts On/Off

Turning receipts on or off can be a bit tricky, but don't worry, I've got you covered. You can turn off read receipts by going to Settings > Apps > Messages and turning off Send Read Receipts.

To turn off read receipts for one person, go to the Messages app, tap a conversation, and then tap the number or name of the person you're communicating with at the top of the conversation. From there, turn off Send Read Receipts.

On an iPhone, read receipts are the only way to tell if someone read a text you sent from Messages. If you and your recipient enable read receipts, the word Read will be seen under the most recent message, along with the time the message was read.

To enable or disable read receipts on your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages and turn on or off Send Read Receipts. Keep in mind that read receipts work only when both you and your recipient enable iMessage from the Messages settings.
