Split-screen mode on the iPad is a game-changer for multitaskers. It allows you to have two apps open at the same time, making it easier to switch between them.
To set up split-screen mode on your iPad, go to the home screen and find the app you want to use in the center of the screen. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the dock, then select the second app you want to use.
With split-screen mode, you can have two apps open at the same time, with one app taking up the left side of the screen and the other app taking up the right side. This is great for tasks like browsing the web and checking email.
To move an app from one side of the screen to the other, simply drag it to the desired side.

Enabling and Configuring Stage Manager
To enable Stage Manager on your iPad, head to Settings –> Home Screen & Multitasking –> Stage Manager and toggle "Use Stage Manager on iPad" on.
You can also access Stage Manager by swiping down from the top right to open Control Center and tapping the Stage Manager icon.
To adjust the layout options, long-press the Stage Manager icon and check or uncheck Recent Apps or Dock. This can only be done when Stage Manager is enabled.
You might not always see the Recent Apps or Dock, even when they're enabled, due to various factors like the number of app windows you have open.
To unhide them quickly, swipe in from the right edge for Recent Apps or the bottom edge for the Dock.
You can drag an app icon or preview from the Recent Apps or Dock to the currently open app window for easy access.
By dragging an app from the App Library in your Dock to the current app window, you can also add it to the current group or window.
Multitasking Options
You can run up to three apps on the screen simultaneously by using Split View and Slide Over at the same time. This is especially useful for getting things done quickly and efficiently.
To use multiple Split View app pairings, jump into the App Switcher and you'll see that Split View apps show up together, allowing you to quickly swipe between them.
If you have a Magic Keyboard, you can use touchpad gestures to swipe between Slide Over apps at lightning speed. Just three-finger swipe the same way you would between fullscreen apps.
Even without a Magic Keyboard, you can use swipe gestures on Slide Over apps by grabbing the handle at the bottom and swiping left or right.
You can also use Stage Manager to run multiple apps at the same time on an iPad powered by one of Apple's M-series chips. To do this, open the Control Center and tap the icon with the rectangle and three square dots.
Here are some ways to multitask on your iPad:
• Use Split View and Slide Over at the same time to run up to three apps on the screen.
• Use multiple Split View app pairings to quickly swipe between them.
• Use Stage Manager to run multiple apps at the same time on an iPad powered by an M-series chip.
• Use the Multitasking Toolbar to display separate windows and switch between them.
• View thumbnails of multitasking windows to access saved windows after switching to another app.

Multitasking Features
You can use Split View and Slide Over at the same time, allowing you to have three apps on the screen simultaneously.
The multitasking toolbar makes it easy to switch between apps and modes. To access it, tap the three-dot icon at the top of the screen.
With the multitasking toolbar, you can choose to display your current app in full screen mode, or split it with another app in Split View mode.
To transition to Split View mode, tap the three-dot icon on the current app and choose the Split View setting. You can then choose Left Split or Right Split to arrange the two apps side by side.
You can also view thumbnails of multitasking windows by swiping up to return to the home screen and then swiping up again to reveal all open apps.
To view different windows of the same app, grab the app icon from the dock and drag it into Slide Over or Split View mode.
You can drag and drop content between two open windows, including text, links, and images. To select text, double-tap on a word, triple-tap on a sentence, or quadruple-tap on a paragraph.
Here are some ways to multitask on your iPad:
- Use Split View and Slide Over at the same time
- Use multiple Split View app pairings for more useful multitasking
- Use the multitasking toolbar to switch between apps and modes
- View thumbnails of multitasking windows

By using these features, you can make the most of your iPad's multitasking capabilities and get more done in less time.
Requirements and Setup
To use app split screen on your iPad, you'll need to meet the requirements.
First, you'll need to have an iPad that's compatible with the feature. You can use a Pad Pro, iPad (5th generation and later), iPad Air 2, or iPad mini 4.
To ensure you can use split view, your iPad needs to be running iOS 11 or higher.
Slide Over Mode
To use Slide Over Mode on your iPad, you need to hold down the icon for the second app and drag it to the right side of the screen until it turns into a small vertical window.
This window will then slide into place as a floating pane on the right side of your screen. You can swipe left to move the pane to the left, and swipe it all the way to the right to dismiss the floating app and then swipe left to get it back again.
To remove the floating app, simply swipe it all the way to the right and it will disappear from view. This is a great way to multitask and keep multiple apps open at the same time.
You can have up to three apps open in Slide Over Mode, but it's generally more useful to have just one or two apps open at a time to avoid cluttering your screen.
By following these simple steps, you can easily switch between apps and use Slide Over Mode to your advantage on your iPad.
Multitasking Toolbar
The Multitasking Toolbar is a game-changer for iPad users. You can access it by tapping the three-dot icon at the top of the screen in an app like Photos. This toolbar presents three different settings: Full Screen, Split View, and Slide Over.
To use Split View, tap the three-dot icon on the current app and choose Split View. You can then select another app to open alongside it. The two apps will appear side by side in Split View mode.
If you want to transition from Slide Over to Split View, tap the three-dot icon on the current app and choose Split View. You can then select Left Split or Right Split to arrange the two apps.
Here are the steps to follow:
- Tap the three-dot icon at the top of the screen in an app.
- Choose Split View to open another app alongside it.
- Tap the three-dot icon on the current app and choose Left Split or Right Split to arrange the two apps.
The Multitasking Toolbar makes it easy to work with separate windows on your iPad.
Three Apps
To view three apps at once on your iPad, you can combine Slide Over and Split View mode.
You can have two apps in Split View mode, and then swipe up from the bottom of the screen to display the dock.
Hold down your finger on a third app and pull it out of the dock and onto the center of the screen, then release your hold.
This will place the new app in Slide Over mode, appearing on the left or right side of the screen.
If you drag that app to one side of the screen, it will replace the app on that side.
You can also grab multiple files at a time by starting to drag a file from the Files app and then tapping on a few more files to add them to the mix.
Drop them in the other app, and you should see all the files you dragged as attachments.
Switching to another app while multitasking saves the windows arranged in Split View or Slide Over mode, which can be accessed again via thumbnails.
To do this, swipe up to return to the home screen, then swipe up again to reveal all open apps.
Adjusting Screen Size and Layout
Split View on your iPad allows you to run two apps side-by-side, making it easier to multitask and increase productivity. This feature is available on all iPad Pros, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th gen and later, and iPad mini 4 and later running iOS/iPadOS 9 and newer.
To adjust the size of your split-screen apps, you can press the short gray line in the middle of the black line splitting your screen in half and move it to the right or left. This will give one app more screen space than the other.
The size adjustment will happen automatically, but you can change it if one app requires more space. Unfortunately, you don't have total freedom to determine the split proportions of your screen.
In portrait orientation, the slider will only snap in place in increments of thirds, so your apps will be distributed in a 30-60 split (or 60-30, depending on if you want the bigger app on the top or bottom). In landscape orientation, the slider will stick to quarters, meaning your apps can only be distributed 50-50, 25-75, or 75-25.
Here are the possible split proportions of your screen in portrait and landscape orientations:
- Portrait: 30-60, 60-30
- Landscape: 50-50, 25-75, 75-25
Turning Off and Customizing
To turn off the split-screen view on your iPad, simply close one of the apps or windows. You can do this by either closing the app or window, or by switching to a different app or window.
You can also adjust the size of your split-screen apps by moving the black line splitting your screen in half. This will allow you to give more screen space to one app over the other.
If you're holding your iPad in a portrait orientation, the slider will only snap in place in increments of thirds, so your apps will be distributed in a 30-60 split. With your iPad in a landscape orientation, the slider will stick to quarters, meaning your apps can only be distributed 50-50, 25-75, or 75-25.
There are a few ways to make an app group in Stage Manager. You can use the ellipsis (•••) icon in an app window and choose "Add Another Window." You can also select the app you want to add to the group from the App Switcher or Dock.
You can only have four apps per group, so if you try to add another app to a group with four already, it will kick out one of the other apps.
