The 3 Skypephone S2 is a solid choice if you're looking for a phone that's just a phone, but with a bonus of free calling. It's as good as you'll get from mid-range Nokia or Sony Ericsson handsets.

The phone has improved significantly from its predecessor, with a better camera, web surfing capabilities, and a vastly improved browser. Overall, it's a better phone all round.

However, it's essential to note that pay-as-you-go customers will have to top up the phone every 90 days to benefit from the free Skype calling, which was every 30 days previously.

Design and Redesign

The 3 Skypephone S2 is a sleek device, measuring 103 x 45 x 14mm, making it a compact phone. It's got a nice design with brushed aluminium and black plastic, and the clicky buttons are a great touch.

The phone's small form factor makes it easy to carry around, and the materials used give it a premium feel. I've had a chance to hold one, and I was impressed by its build quality.

The redesign of the Skypephone S2 is definitely an improvement over the original, and it's clear that 3 has put some thought into making it more user-friendly.

ISKOOT

The iSkoot platform was used by the 3 Skypephone S2 to provide its Skype service.

iSkoot shut down its service on January 20, 2011, leaving the Skypephone S2 with a non-functioning "click to upgrade" link.

No warning was given to customers by Three about this shutdown.

Visiting the Three website shows that they removed the Skypephone from their product offerings, violating their own terms and conditions.

Redesign Ahoy

The new 3 Skypephone S2 is a great example of a redesign done right. It looks a lot nicer than the old version, with lots of brushed aluminium and black plastic.

This phone has a very small form factor, measuring 103 x 45 x 14mm. It's compact and easy to carry around.

The new design isn't just about looks - it also includes some great new features. The camera has been upgraded to 3.2-megapixels, which is a big improvement over the old version.

You can use the Skype app to call people over the HSDPA connection, or send chat messages. This is really useful for people who use Skype a lot, like I do at work.

One of the best things about this phone is the price - it costs just £69. And with unlimited data on a pay-as-you-go deal for £5 a month, it's a great value.

I'm considering picking up this phone on Pay-as-you-go for £70. I think it would be really useful as a secondary phone for emergencies, and I could also use it as a wireless dongle.
