SPACEWAY-3 was born out of a challenge, as Hughes lost the bid to build the Teledesic system to Motorola in the late 1990s.

The leadership was tasked by the Board to build its own system, and in just 30 days, they came back with the initial concept of the SPACEWAY system, which was signed off on for $1.8 billion.

SPACEWAY-3 operated in a newly assigned Ka-band spectrum and had more than five times the capacity of other satellites in its generation.

It could switch and route broadband traffic on the satellite, providing single-hop communications between small satellite terminals.

The satellite's advanced antenna technology used dynamic formation of spot-beams across the continental U.S., giving Hughes a flexible way to manage capacity and deliver bandwidth services on demand.

Finding engineers with the right skills and experience was difficult at the time, as the dot com boom was in full swing and many top talent were being scooped up by other companies.

Despite these challenges, SPACEWAY-3 was able to single-handedly double the world's available Ka-band capacity supply when it entered service in October 2007.

It activated its first customer and began serving HughesNet customers in the United States in April 2008.

By January 2010, HughesNet had surpassed 500,000 North American subscribers.

Spaceway-3 was launched on August 14, 2007, aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from the Centre Spatial Guyanais in French Guiana. This marked the beginning of a new era for Hughes Network Systems as a satellite system operator.
