Players can earn "Immortal Credits" through gameplay and use them to buy and upgrade characters. At launch, there were 25 purchasable heroes in the game, including 9 bronze, 9 silver, and 7 gold characters.

Each Immortal has three signature attacks (two regular and a Finisher), and can go up to level 50. They can also be upgraded to Legendary status if the player owns another card copy of the character.

Immortal stats grow in levels, and each Immortal is armed with quick and powerful regular attacks, blocking, and three signature attacks. Immortals can be upgraded to Legendary status, allowing a Bronze character to compete equally with lower leveled Silver and even Gold Characters.

In matches, Immortals earn experience points and Immortal credits, which can be used to level up their Immortals' signature attacks, buy other characters, or buy talent cards to strengthen their characters.

The game also offers a Challenge match once the initial battle matches are complete, and Battle matches can be revisited once completed for more experience points and Immortal credits.

Here are the different types of Immortal attacks:

  • Quick and powerful regular attacks
  • Blocking
  • Three signature attacks (two regular and a Finisher)

By fighting, an adrenaline bar in the bottom left corner is filled, which can be used to perform signature attacks unique for each character.

Online Features

Online Features of WWE Immortals are quite impressive. Players can participate in online competitive battling, where they can challenge their Immortals against other players' Immortals for prizes.

To compete, players can choose from three types of matches: Singles Match, Show Match, and Main Event. These matches reward players with Battle Points, which increase their tournament ranking.

Players can also earn extra Battle Points by completing Daily Quests, which adds an extra layer of challenge and reward. Completing these quests can also give players a boost in their tournament ranking.

Prizes for winning matches include Immortal Credits, special Gear cards, Challenge Stage tokens, and exclusive renditions of characters. These exclusive characters can be a great addition to a player's collection.

Here are the types of matches players can participate in:

  • Singles Match (one opponent)
  • Show Match (3 opponents)
  • Main Event (5 opponents)

Winning matches can also reward players with Stamina cards, which can help re-energize their Immortals to fight again.

Each card has a bronze, silver, or gold variation, and their two main statistics, health and damage, increase as you play.

You can level up your Immortals up to level 50, and combine duplicate cards to make them Legendary, up to Legendary VII.

The relationships between certain characters, such as natural allies or rivals, can also affect their statistics when fighting together.

Here's a breakdown of the card levels and combinations:

Criticisms and Cancellation

WWE Immortals received less-than-stellar reviews, but it still managed to garner a decent fan base among WWE mobile gamers for almost four years.

The game's popularity wasn't enough to save it, though, as it was announced that WWE Immortals would be shutting down in early 2019.

After December 31, 2018, in-app purchases were no longer available, but players could still spend any in-game currencies they already had until February 28, 2019.

Lacked Depth of Injustice and Mortal Kombat

The game's roster was limited at release, featuring only twenty-five wrestlers to purchase at launch.

NetherRealm's previous work, such as Injustice: Gods Among Us, was more innovative, but WWE Immortals didn't offer any new ideas.

Players battled in teams of three, earning "Immortal Credits", "Gear Cards", and tokens used to purchase new superstars and upgrades.

Each superstar had basic attack and block moves and could execute three signature moves, including a finisher.

The moves were motion-captured, then exaggerated to fit the superstar's character in the game.

The game included online play, allowing mobile gamers to battle for more Immortal Credits, special Gear Cards, and tokens.

Tournaments could unlock alternate characters, and over time, more superstars and game modes were released, including a popular Zombie Invasion mode.

Canceled in 2018

WWE Immortals was shut down in early 2019 after almost four years of decent fan base among WWE mobile gamers.

The game's closure was announced in late November 2018, giving players a heads up on what to expect.

In-app purchases stopped being available after December 31, 2018.

Players could still play and spend any in-game currencies they already had until February 28, 2019.

After February 28, 2019, only the single-player campaign would be available.

WBID cloud saves would no longer function after February 28, 2019.

The game officially closed on February 28, 2019.

Unique Aspects

The collaboration between the Mortal Kombat team and WWE is what makes WWE Immortals their weirdest mobile game. The game's out-of-this-world premise is a big part of its weirdness.

The game took characters that were already larger-than-life and made them larger than reality. This is evident in the fantastical powers and personas given to superstars like The Rock, who's portrayed as a god.

John Cena's superhero persona is another example of how the game amplified the characters' traits. Brock Lesnar's cyborg persona is also a far cry from his usual in-ring persona.

The game's short lifespan is another unique aspect of WWE Immortals. It was only available for a few years, launching in early 2015 and shutting down in early 2019.
