Sprint's Acquisition and Shutdown

Sprint's decision to shut down Virgin Mobile USA was likely influenced by simple financials.

The company had previously merged with T-Mobile, which reduced choice in the market for consumers.

Sprint's shutdown of Virgin Mobile USA is not the first time the company has discontinued a service - in 2010, it stopped providing service to Helio post-paid customers.

Sprint offered Helio customers incentives to switch to Sprint-branded service plans.

Acquisition of Helio

In 2008, Virgin Mobile USA acquired Helio, Inc., a competing mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) also hosted on the Sprint network, aimed at post-paid, contract users.

This acquisition marked a significant move by Virgin Mobile USA to expand its reach in the market.

By late 2009, Virgin Mobile USA ceased selling new Helio phones or service, dropping the Helio name.

Sprint is shutting down its prepaid Virgin Mobile USA phone business, transferring existing customers to Boost Mobile.

Customers can keep their same phone and pay the same price, but they may need to change how they pay for Boost Mobile, as the company won't be supporting PayPal accounts or 45/90 Day top-ups.

The shutdown is part of the remedy process laid out by the Department of Justice for the merger of Sprint and T-Mobile.

Following the transfer, Virgin will take back the Virgin Mobile brand for the US and work on options to relaunch a modern mobile offer.

Virgin Group will regain control of its valuable brand, ending a period of uncertainty caused by the protracted merger discussions.

The shutdown is expected to be complete, but an exact date is not specified.

Sprint Acquires Nextel

Sprint Nextel Corporation acquired Virgin Mobile USA in 2009.

The acquisition was made on July 28, 2009, and it was valued at approximately US$5.50 per share of Virgin Mobile USA common stock.

Sprint Nextel owned 13.1% of Virgin Mobile USA before making the purchase.

After the acquisition, Sprint Nextel formed the Sprint Prepaid Group, which included Sprint's other prepaid offerings, Boost Mobile and Common Cents Mobile.

Users could access Broadband2Go services by the day or by the month. A daily plan offered 250 MB of full-speed access, which was a decent amount for casual browsing.

Monthly plans ranged from 500 MB to 6 GB of access, giving customers more flexibility to choose the right plan for their needs.

Another discontinued service was PayLo, which offered unlimited talk and text for $40 per month. This was a great option for customers who primarily used their phones for calling and texting.

Virgin Mobile also offered Data Done Right plans, which provided talk, text, and mobile web access for feature phones and smartphones. These plans could only be purchased at Walmart, making it a convenient option for customers who already shopped at the store.

The launch of Beyond Talk plans was a key component of Virgin Mobile USA's strategy to appeal to a wider range of customers. By offering unlimited text and data, the company aimed to provide a more convenient and flexible mobile experience.

Smart Bold Vision for Wireless

Virgin Mobile USA has a bold vision for the wireless world, as seen in its marketing efforts. They targeted young adults with edgy, pop culture content, including a music video featuring Lady Gaga with product placement for a Virgin Mobile branded phone.

Their campaign "Sparah" was a fictional Hollywood celebrity couple that starred in multiple videos and photo galleries on a dedicated website. This campaign aimed to connect the ability for consumers to enjoy data-intensive web content using a Virgin Mobile USA unlimited data plan.

Virgin Mobile USA also aired television ads that parodied elements of T-Mobile USA and AT&T Mobility's marketing, showcasing an unflattering portrayal of their spokespersons. This move shows their willingness to think outside the box and challenge the status quo.

Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, took center stage in an ad campaign with the slogan "We answer to a higher calling". This campaign highlights Virgin Mobile USA's commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.

In the future, Virgin Mobile USA plans to expand its services, including joining forces with Boost in February, and offering mobile hotspots for iPads, Android tablets, and ebook readers. This move will further solidify their position as a leader in the wireless world.
