Viceland Canada was launched in 2015, making it a relatively new addition to the Canadian media landscape.

The channel was created by Vice Media, a company known for its youth-oriented content and edgy style.

Viceland Canada focuses on documentary-style programming, often exploring complex issues and social justice topics.

From its launch, Viceland Canada has gained a loyal following among young Canadians, who appreciate its unique perspective and unapologetic approach to storytelling.

Viceland Canada

Viceland Canada was a unique iteration of the Viceland network, designed to cater to the Canadian market. It was launched concurrently with the U.S. version as a relaunch of The Biography Channel, with Rogers Media as a managing partner.

The Canadian version produced some of its own programming, sourced primarily from a Toronto studio it co-founded with Rogers, to comply with Canadian content regulations. One-third of the network's first slate of original programming were Canadian productions from this new facility.

The partnership between Rogers and Vice was short-lived, as Rogers intended to cease providing funding to Viceland in early 2018, citing low viewership and unprofitability. The Viceland channel was discontinued on March 31, 2018, and Vice inherited complete ownership of the Toronto production studio and the original content produced for the channel.

Vice later announced a new long-term output deal with Bell Media, with its programming being aired by Bell platforms such as Crave and Much.

The partnership was aimed at producing mobile, web, and TV content from the Toronto-based Vice Canada studio. Vice Media produced a host of Canadian-originated TV formats to air on the Viceland network internationally and mobile adaptations of Vice franchises.

Rogers Communications cited a crowded content universe and changing audience habits as reasons for the end of the partnership. The move follows Viceland Canada bleeding revenue and subscribers, with a $2.49 million pre-tax loss in 2016, against a pre-tax profit of $236,938 in 2015.

Rogers Communications stated that it continues to evolve its strategy to deliver unique content to Canadians. Vice Canada has acquired full control of the Vice Canada studio in Toronto and a Viceland Canada content library comprising around 130 hours of original programming.
