OneDrive offers robust data protection and security features to safeguard your files and folders. It uses encryption to protect your data both in transit and at rest.

With Two-Factor Authentication, you can add an extra layer of security to your account, making it harder for unauthorized users to access your files. This feature is available across all devices.

OneDrive also provides a robust backup system, which automatically saves your files to the cloud, ensuring you never lose your important documents or photos. This feature is especially useful when you're working on a project and need to access your files from multiple devices.

OneDrive's robust security features also include real-time threat detection and automatic updates, keeping your account safe from potential threats.

Phishing and Security

A sophisticated phishing campaign targeting Microsoft OneDrive users has been observed, with threat actors relying on social engineering tactics to trick users into executing a PowerShell script, which leads to their systems being compromised.

The attack chain starts with an email containing an .html file that displays an image simulating a Microsoft OneDrive page displaying a file named “Reports.pdf” and a window titled “Error 0x8004de86” with a fake error message.

Most of the users targeted by this campaign are in the U.S. (40%), South Korea (17%), Germany (14%), and India (10%), highlighting the global nature of these threats.

Trick users into clicking a button that claims to explain how to fix a DNS issue, suggesting that resolving this issue will grant access to a desired file.

The command used in the phishing attack first runs ipconfig /flushdns, then creates a folder on the C: drive named “downloads,” and downloads an archive file into this location.

The attack unfolds as follows: the victim receives an email containing an .html file, which displays an image designed to create a sense of urgency about accessing the document, thereby increasing the likelihood that the user will follow the provided instructions.

Data Protection

Data Protection is a top priority at UNT System, and it's essential to understand the best practices to keep your data safe. You should always back up your system data and save files to a platform maintained by ITSS on a daily basis.

To encrypt sensitive data, use a secure platform like OneDrive or department file shares. Confidential data includes student information, most employee information, and personally identifiable information.

Don't download sensitive or confidential data to a personally-owned device, as it's harder to secure. Confidential data can be compromised if it falls into the wrong hands.

To prevent unauthorized access, avoid saving passwords in your browser and log out of devices and applications when no longer in use. This will prevent an unauthorized party from using your account to access system resources and data.

Clear your web-browsing data cache when no longer using a web browser to ensure your web browser doesn't store your account, password, or other sensitive data.
