If you've ever sent a text message on your iPhone only to realize you made a mistake, you're not alone.

The good news is that you can unsend messages on your iPhone. According to Apple's support page, iPhone users can recall and delete sent messages within a short time frame.

To take advantage of this feature, you'll need to enable "Send Last Message" in your iPhone's settings. This will allow you to recall and delete your most recent message.

Unsending Messages

You can undo a recently sent message for up to 2 minutes after sending it. To do this, go to the Messages app on your iPhone, touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send.

A note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both conversation transcripts: yours and your recipient's. This note is visible on both your iPhone and your recipient's device.

Unsending removes the message from your recipient's device. The message bubble updates to reflect your edits on both your iPhone and your recipient's device, and both of you can tap Edited to see previous versions of your message.

If you're using an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, you can unsend a message for up to two minutes after you send it. However, if you're using an older OS, running iOS 15 or lower, you can see an unsent message, but it's less likely that people have a device running iOS 15 or earlier.

Here are the steps to unsend a message:

  1. Go to the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send.

Note: The recipient also needs to be using iOS 16 minimum for the unsend feature to work.

To see an unsent message, you need to have Messages enabled for iCloud, iCloud Keychain turned on, and two-factor authentication. This allows you to view the message on your device, but it won't be visible to the recipient.

If you're using an older OS, running iOS 15 or lower, you can see an unsent message. However, this is less likely as people typically update their phones more frequently than their Macs.

You can also edit messages you already sent, but there's a limit of 5 times within 15 minutes after you send a message. An "Edited" note will appear below the message.

Here's a summary of the devices you can use to view unsent messages:

Keep in mind that the recipient needs to be using iOS 16 minimum for you to see the "Edited" note. If the recipient is using an older OS, they may still see the original message in the conversation, along with a note saying you unsent it.

You can turn off iMessage to prevent unsent messages from being sent. Go to Settings, Messages, and toggle the switch beside iMessage to the "off" position.

This isn't a permanent solution, but it's a viable temporary workaround if you're concerned about someone being secretive. Just keep in mind that you'll still have data, but you won't be able to send or receive iMessages.

If you're using an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with the latest operating system, you can unsend iMessages in the Messages app.

Don't Use iMessage

If you don't use iMessage, you can avoid the risk of sent messages being unsent. Choosing to stick only with SMS can prevent the sender from unsend a message that has already been sent.

You can turn off iMessage without turning off data entirely by going to Settings, Messages, and turning the switch beside iMessage to the “off” position.

Sending iMessage on iPhone

You can unsend an iMessage on an iPhone, but only if you're quick about it - you have up to two minutes after sending it to undo the message.

This feature requires iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, or Ventura on a Mac.

If the person you're messaging uses an older operating system, they may still see the original message with a note saying you unsent it.

You can unsend an iMessage on your iPhone, but only for a short time – up to two minutes after sending it. This feature is only available on iPhones running iOS 16 or later.

To unsend an iMessage, go to the Messages app on your iPhone, touch and hold the message bubble, and then tap Undo Send. A note confirming that you unsent the message will appear in both conversation transcripts.

The message bubble will update to reflect your edits on both your iPhone and your recipient's device. You can also tap Edited to see previous versions of your message.

If the person you're messaging uses a device with an older operating system, they may still see the original message in the conversation, along with a note saying you unsent it. This is because unsending only removes the message from your recipient's device, but doesn't delete it from their device's history.
