Ubuntu One Synchronizes Your Digital Life

Ubuntu One is a cloud-based service that allows you to access your files, music, and photos from anywhere. It's like having your own personal cloud storage.

With Ubuntu One, you can store up to 5GB of files, including documents, pictures, and videos. This means you can access your files from any device with an internet connection.

Ubuntu One also allows you to share files with friends and family, making it easy to collaborate on projects.

Synchronizing

Synchronizing your files, contacts, and bookmarks with Ubuntu One is a breeze. Any folders, and the contents therein, may be selected for synchronization by right clicking on the folder icon in the Nautilus file manager and selecting the Synchronize This Folder option.

You can also synchronize your contacts by installing the desktopcouch-ubuntuone package, which can be done through the Ubuntu One Control Panel. Once installed, you can copy all your contacts to the Ubuntu One address book.

Synchronizing bookmarks is just as easy, and requires the installation of the desktopcouch-ubuntuone package. After installation, all your Firefox bookmarks will automatically be synchronized with Ubuntu One and any other systems subscribed to the same account.

Synchronizing Folders

You can select any folder for synchronization with Ubuntu One by right clicking on its icon in the Nautilus file manager.

To do this, simply select the Synchronize This Folder option from the Ubuntu One pull right menu.

Folders selected for Ubuntu One synchronization are marked with a green check mark emblem within the file manager.

If a file or folder needs to be synchronized, or is in the process of being synchronized with Ubuntu One, a specific emblem appears next to the icon in the file manager.

Any files or sub-folders created within an Ubuntu One synchronized folder are stored in the cloud and also synchronized with any other systems registered with the same Ubuntu One account.

A new folder named Ubuntu One is created within the user’s home folder when an Ubuntu One subscription is activated on a system.

This folder is automatically backed up to the cloud and propagated to all other systems using the same Ubuntu One account.

Any files or sub-folders placed within the Ubuntu One folder are automatically stored in the cloud and synchronized with other systems or devices registered with the same Ubuntu One account.

Synchronizing Bookmarks

Synchronizing Bookmarks is a convenient feature that allows you to access your bookmarks from any device connected to your Ubuntu One user account.

To get started, you'll need to install the desktopcouch-ubuntuone package, which is required for bookmark synchronization.

This package is already installed if you've followed the instructions in a previous section of this chapter.

Once installed, open the Ubuntu One Control Panel and select the Services tab.

Click on the Install now button located beneath Enable Bookmarks Sync to begin the synchronization process.

All your Firefox bookmarks will automatically be synchronized with both Ubuntu One and any other systems subscribed to your Ubuntu One user account.

Synchronize Installed Software

Cloud Storage

Cloud Storage is a core feature of Ubuntu One, allowing users to store and access files from any device with an internet connection. Files placed within the Ubuntu One folder are automatically backed up to the cloud and synchronized with any other systems registered with the same Ubuntu One account.

To access your cloud folders, you'll need to open the Ubuntu One Control Panel and navigate to the Cloud Folders tab. This is where you can see a list of all the folders that are set up to sync with the cloud.

The Ubuntu One folder is automatically created in your home folder when you activate an Ubuntu One subscription on a system. This folder is where you'll store files and subfolders that you want to sync with the cloud.

Sharing

Sharing is a great way to collaborate with others on the cloud. To share a file or folder on Ubuntu One, it must first be configured to be synchronized through Ubuntu One.

You can log into your account on the Ubuntu One web site at http://one.ubuntu.com to share files. Click on the Files tab and click on the more link to the right of the file or folder to be shared.

Enter the email address of the Ubuntu One user you want to share with and select whether or not they can make modifications to the content. Clicking the Share this folder button sends an email message to the user inviting them to accept the share.

Once accepted, the item will be listed under the user's Files tab on the Ubuntu One web site. They can download the file if necessary or enable local synchronization of the file.

You can also make files publicly available to anyone through Ubuntu One via a short URL link. To do this, simply right click on the file and select Ubuntu One -> Publish from the resulting menu.

Syncing Contacts

In Ubuntu One, you can synchronize your contacts and store them online.

To get started, you'll need to install some additional packages, which can be achieved by opening the Ubuntu One Control Panel and selecting the Services tab.

The desktopcouch-ubuntuone package is required for contact synchronization, and you can install it by clicking on the Install now button.

Once installed, you'll see additional options to synchronize contacts and bookmarks in the services page.

To enable contact synchronization, click on the Install now button located beneath the contacts option.

After installation, synchronization of contact information in the Evolution mail client is enabled.

You can launch Evolution by clicking on the envelope icon in the top panel of the Unity desktop.

In the Evolution window, select the address book to be synchronized and choose the Actions -> Copy All Contacts To… menu option.

This will initiate the copy process, and once completed, the contacts will be synchronized during the next Ubuntu One synchronization session.

Your contacts will appear in the Ubuntu One web portal as well as on any other Ubuntu systems subscribed to the same Ubuntu One account.

To get started with Ubuntu One, you need to request an invitation code from Ubuntu, which can take up to 3 days.

The application is only compatible with Linux-based computers, specifically Ubuntu Jaunty, and won't work on Windows or Mac.
