The People's Operator is back in the UK, thanks to Uplands Mobiles acquiring the name of the defunct MVNO, which originally launched in 2012.

Andrew Rosenfeld, Tom Gutteridge, and Mark Epstein co-founded The People's Operator as an ethical mobile network operator, with a focus on refurbished mobiles and sustainability.

Conditions were very different when TPO first launched, with no refurbishment market or environmental focus, but now consumers are seeing no drop in quality from buying refurbished handsets.

Consumers are now more aware of the importance of sourcing products sustainably, and The People's Operator is bringing this ethos back to the UK.

Uplands Mobiles MD Paul Hooper is excited to bring TPO back to the UK and is looking forward to working with customers and partners who care about the environment and supporting good causes.

The People's Operator will offer a quarter of its profits to charity, and customers will have the option to allocate an additional 10% of their spend to a cause of their choice.

Customers will be able to choose where their extra 10% goes, including local youth centres or schools, making a real difference to their communities.

The People's Operator is based in Shoreditch, London, and has partnerships with charities like the NSPCC and The Trussell Trust, which helps local communities in the UK and Bulgaria.

The network plans to remain totally online, with no stores, and will sell SIMs within charity stores.

Launch and Foundation

The People's Operator launched on November 19, 2012, with a clear aim of being an ethical mobile phone operator.

The company was founded by three individuals: Andrew Rosenfeld, Tom Gutteridge, and Mark Epstein, with Rosenfeld providing the primary financial backing. TPO was based in Shoreditch, London.

At launch, the company was owned entirely by its co-founders, with Rosenfeld as the Chairman, Gutteridge and Epstein as vice-chairs, and Alex Franks as the chief executive.

TPO's initial goal was to offer a unique service where customers could give an extra 10 percent of their monthly spend to a specific charity or community organisation.

The People's Operator Foundation was established to fund charities and community groups in the UK, with plans for 25% of TPO's profit to go towards it.

However, the company never turned a profit, and the Foundation was dissolved at the end of 2014.

TPO's customers could also choose to donate 10% of their call, text, and data spend to a nominated charity or community group.

This initiative was initially meant to come from TPO's marketing budget, but it's unclear how it was actually implemented.

By April 2013, TPO had already partnered with several notable organisations, including NSPCC, The Trussell Trust, and Dimbleby Cancer Care.

The company continued to expand its partnerships, with Labour Party members encouraged to sign up to TPO to give 10 percent of their bill back to the party.

Reception and Criticism

The People's Operator received criticism in 2013 for its deal with Unite, which included free phone calls and texts for members of its strike committee. This was seen as a "campaign of intimidation" against bosses at the Grangemouth Refinery.

In response to these allegations, Rosenfeld denied any involvement in "dirty tricks campaigns" during industrial disputes.

The company's stock was reviewed in The Telegraph in 2014, after raising £20 million in an initial public offering. The review noted that the firm's value was less than £1 million, or 1.3 pence per share.

However, finnCap, a House broker, disagreed with this assessment and predicted a 250-pence target price for the shares. They expected TPO to generate £98 million in revenue and £17.1 million in pre-tax profits by the end of 2016.

Unfortunately, finnCap's predictions were far off the mark, with TPO signaling revenues of only £3.6 million in 2016, a staggering 96% short of expectation.

TPO suffered a major reputational hit in 2016 after a botched transfer of customers to 4G service left many without phone service for weeks. The company's handling of the situation was described as an "omnishambles".
