Thaicom 5 is a Thai communications satellite that was launched in 2006. It was built by Space Systems/Loral.
The satellite is equipped with 24 C-band transponders and 24 Ku-band transponders, providing coverage over Asia.
Thaicom 5 is used for a variety of applications, including television broadcasting, telecommunications, and internet services.

Launch Details
Thaicom 5 was launched on an Ariane 5ECA carrier rocket from the Guiana Space Centre. The launch occurred at 21:09 UTC on 27 May 2006.
The rocket was contracted by Arianespace and flew from ELA-3. Thaicom 5 was launched along with the Mexican Satmex 6 spacecraft.
At the time, Thaicom 5 and Satmex 6 were the heaviest dual-satellite payload ever launched into geosynchronous transfer orbit. However, this record has since been broken.
Here is a list of the launch details:
- Launch date: 27 May 2006
- Launch time: 21:09 UTC
- Launch vehicle: Ariane 5ECA
- Launch site: Guiana Space Centre (ELA-3)
- Cosmic companions: Mexican Satmex 6 spacecraft
Technical Specifications
Thaicom 5 uses DVB-S as its system encryption method. This is a widely used standard for digital television broadcasting.
The satellite has multiple channels available, including NBT TV feeds and Thai TV 5 feeds. These channels can be received at different frequencies, with NBT TV feeds available on 3865 H and Thai TV 5 feeds available on 4032 H.
Here are the technical specifications for the channels:
Ku Band
The Thaicom 5 satellite at 78.5°E has Ku-band transponders.
One of the frequencies used for Ku-band transmission is 12272, with a polarization of H (horizontal) and a symbol rate of 30000.
This frequency is shared by multiple channels, including Thai TV Global Network, which is available for free-to-air (FTA) viewing.
The TrueVisions channel is also transmitted on this frequency, but it is encrypted with Irdeto 2.
Here's a list of some of the channels transmitted on the Ku-band frequency 12272:
- Thai TV Global Network (FTA)
- DLTV 1-15
- MySci (encrypted with Irdeto 2)
- Fox Thai
- Khongdee
- Samrujlok
- Nick Jr Asia
- Modern India TV (encrypted with BISS)
- GMM Music
- Fan TV
- Bang Channel
- Sexy Channel
- Peace TV
- MV Lao TV
- Major Channel Asian
- Cartoon Club
- GTH On Air
- Five Channel
- Green Channel
- ACTS Channel
- GCJ O Shopping
- Dragon TV
- Zaa Network
- Major Channel Mix
Strong TP
The Strong TP (Transponder) of Thaicom 5 is a crucial aspect of its technical specifications. It's where the satellite's broadcast signals are transmitted, and it's essential to understand its parameters for optimal reception.
The Strong TP of Thaicom 5 has a frequency of 3865 H, which is a specific range of electromagnetic waves used for broadcasting. This frequency is used by NBT TV feeds.
The symbol rate of the Strong TP is 3750 3/4, which indicates the rate at which the broadcast signals are transmitted. This is a critical parameter for determining the quality of the signal.

Here's a table summarizing the Strong TP parameters for NBT TV feeds:
Another Strong TP of Thaicom 5 is used by Thai TV 5 feeds, with a frequency of 4032 H. This is a different range of electromagnetic waves used for broadcasting.
The symbol rate of this Strong TP is 4300 3/4, which is a higher rate than the previous one. This indicates that the broadcast signals are transmitted at a faster rate.
Thai TV 5 feeds use the same system encryption as NBT TV feeds, which is DVB-S. This is a widely used standard for digital video broadcasting.
Update and News
Thaicom 5 has received an update with a new channel. This update is part of the Thaicom 5 Satellite TV Channels Update.
The Thaicom 5 update includes a new channel. This channel is now available for viewers to access.
Controversy and Dispute
Thaicom, the Thai satellite operator, is currently in a dispute with Thailand's Ministry of Digital Economy and Society over the retired communications satellite Thaicom 5.

The Ministry has made some pretty significant demands, including that Thaicom build a replacement satellite and hand it over to the Ministry. If this doesn't happen, Thaicom and its parent company Intouch Holdings will have to pay a whopping 7,790,097,900 baht, which is roughly US$257 million, plus 7.5% interest per annum from 30 October 2020.
Intouch Holdings has also been asked to pay a fine of 4,980,000 baht, approximately US$165,197, with 7.5% interest per annum from 30 October 2020 if it's not paid. And if Thaicom doesn't comply, it'll face a daily fine from 1 November 2020.
Intouch has stated that it's commenced a dispute settlement process and will provide updates.
