One of the best features of creating stickers is that you can use them immediately in your iMessage conversations.

Creating Stickers

Creating stickers is a fun and creative process. You can use your own images or create new ones from scratch.

To get started, you'll need to create a set of sticker images and icons for the app. You can use a program like Sketch or Illustrator to finalize your designs. Don't forget to set your artboards to the right size, as stickers are only generated in three sizes: 300 x 300px, 408 x 408px, and 618 x 618px.

For the best results, export your images as .png or .gif files, and make sure they have a transparent background. This will ensure that your stickers look great and don't have any unwanted borders.

If you're using iOS 17, you can even create your own stickers from photos and live photos. This is a great way to add some extra fun to your conversations.

Icons

I used Sketch to build my app icons with a handy Sketch template created by Michael Lee.

If you're not using a template, you'll need to create each icon size individually, as listed below. I've found it's helpful to have a list like this to refer to.

iPhone settings icons come in two sizes: 58 x 58 pt for iPhone settings-29pt@2x and 87 x 87 pt for iPhone-Settings-29pt@3x.

You'll also need to create icons for Messages on iPhone, which come in several sizes, including 120 x 90 pt for Messages-iPhone-60x45pt@2x and 180 x 135 pt for Messages-iPhone-60x45pt@3x.

Messages icons also come in sizes for iPad and iPad Pro, such as 134 x 100 pt for Messages-iPad-67x50pt@2x.

You'll also need to create a Messages icon for the App Store, which is 1024 x 768 pt, as well as a separate icon for the App Store itself, which is 1024 x 1024 px.

Managing Stickers

Managing stickers can be a bit tricky, but don't worry, I've got you covered. You can manage your stickers by using a long press on a sticker to bring up a message reaction menu and a set of management options.

To delete a sticker, long press on a layered sticker or a sticker that's been placed on an incoming message or photo, choose the "Sticker Detail" option, and then swipe to the left and choose the "Delete" button.

Download Xcode and Create Project

To start creating your stickers project, download Xcode and set up a new project. You can find a great tutorial that walks you through the process, showing you how to set up the project, add stickers, and even test the stickers.

You'll also need to add your phone to the test devices for this project. This allows for "automatic signing" in the next step, which can be done by going to Window > Devices and Simulators.

Compatibility

Stickers only display properly on devices running iOS 10 and macOS Sierra.

You won't be able to send stickers to friends using Android devices or older versions of iOS, as they'll just be displayed as an image or GIF.

Sticker packs can be created using Xcode without any coding experience required, making it accessible to developers and artists alike.

Expect to see hundreds of available sticker packs in the near future, in addition to the built-in Hearts, Smileys, Hands, and Classic Mac stickers made available by Apple.

The limited compatibility means you'll need to consider the operating systems of your friends and contacts before sending stickers.

Basic Concepts

Stickers are displayed in place of the iOS keyboard, just like emojis.

To send a sticker, you simply tap it, which puts it in the message field. From there, tap the up arrow to send a sticker.

Stickers can only be added to an incoming chat bubble of some sort, not randomly in the messages field.

You can layer multiple stickers together by sending the first sticker and then adding more stickers to it.
