If you're tired of the default text message sound on your iPhone, you can customize it to suit your style.

There are several options available, including choosing from a variety of built-in sounds. You can also use a ringtone or a song from your music library as a text message sound.

To access these options, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone. From here, you can browse through the built-in sounds or select a custom option.

Customize Notification Sounds and Vibration

You can choose the sound volume for alerts, choose between a tone or sound for alerts, or change the notification vibration pattern (when the phone is silenced).

To change the sound and vibration for notifications, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics.

The tone and vibration you choose apply to both the Messages app and other apps that have notifications on.

You can set how many times to repeat a notification (from Never to 10 Times) in Settings > Notifications > Messages > Customize Notifications > Repeat Alerts.

To give a specific contact their own notification sound, go to the Messages app on your iPhone.

Tap a conversation, then tap the number or name of the person you’re communicating with at the top of the conversation.

Tap Info, tap Edit in the top-right corner, then tap Text Tone.

You can choose a specific sound or vibration pattern to play when you get a message from a specific contact.

To give this contact the option to override a Focus, so any important messages can get through, turn on Emergency Bypass.

Changing Default SMS Settings

You can change the default text tone on your iPhone by following these simple steps. Tap the Settings app on your iPhone homescreen.

To access the text tone settings, tap Sounds & Haptics (or Sounds on older versions). Then, tap Text Tone to browse the list of available tones.

You can swipe through the list to hear each tone play, and tap the one you want to use as your default. The tone will automatically be saved, and you'll hear it play every time you receive a text message.

You can also use ringtones as text tones, and they're listed on the same screen as the other text tones. If you're not sure which tone you want to use, tap it to hear it play before making your final decision.

If you want to see the first line of a message and a picture in banners or alerts, make sure the Show Preview setting is turned on. This setting determines whether or not you see this information in notifications.

You can also repeat alerts for a message by tapping the Repeat Alerts setting. This allows you to choose how many times an alert is repeated, or at what intervals.

Here are the options for the Repeat Alerts setting:

  • Never
  • Once
  • Twice
  • 3 Times
  • 5 Times
  • 10 Times
  • at two-minute intervals

By changing these settings, you can customize your text message experience and make it more personalized to your needs.

Assign Custom Tones to People

You can assign a custom text tone to a specific contact on your iPhone. This feature is particularly useful for distinguishing between different contacts, especially if you have multiple friends or family members who frequently text you.

To assign a custom text tone to a contact, go to the Messages app and tap on a conversation. Tap the number or name of the person you're communicating with at the top of the conversation. Then, tap Info, tap Edit in the top-right corner, and tap Text Tone.

You can choose a text tone from the list, including the iPhone ringtones and text tones installed with iOS. It also includes custom text and ringtones you added to the phone. Tap a tone to hear it play.

Custom text tones can be a great way to personalize your iPhone experience and make it easier to identify who's texting you. You might assign a specific tone to a family member, a friend, or even a colleague.

Here's a step-by-step guide to assigning custom text tones:

  1. Select the contact whose text tone you want to change.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Text Tone.
  4. Choose a text tone from the list.
  5. Tap the tone to place a checkmark next to it, then tap Done.
  6. In the contact screen, tap Done to save the change.

Remember, the tone and vibration you choose apply to both the Messages app and other apps that have notifications on, such as Mail, Phone, and other Apple or third-party apps.

If you're not a fan of the default iPhone text tones and ringtones, you have options. You can buy ringtones and text tones from iTunes or check out one of the great free iPhone ringtones apps.

To set up custom text tones and ringtones, head to the Settings app and audition the sounds. This way, you can hear what they sound like, even if your iPhone is set to silent mode.

You can also assign a custom alert sound to anyone in your Contacts list by following the instructions for assigning a custom ringtone, but instead of tapping Ringtone, tap Text Tone.

To customize your iPhone's notification options, go to the Settings app and scroll down to Messages. From there, you can decide whether you want to see notifications in Notification Center, and whether you want to see a badge with the number of unread new messages on the Messages icon.
