Sharing your laptop's internet connection with others can be a convenient and cost-effective way to get everyone online. Most laptops have a built-in feature called Wi-Fi sharing or internet tethering that allows you to share your internet connection with other devices.

To share your laptop's internet connection, you'll need to enable Wi-Fi sharing on your laptop. This can usually be done by going to your laptop's settings or control panel and looking for the "Wi-Fi sharing" or "internet tethering" option.

It's worth noting that not all laptops have this feature, but many do, including those with Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS.

Set Up Laptop Wi-Fi Hotspot

To set up a laptop Wi-Fi hotspot, you'll need to enable the mobile hotspot feature on your Windows device. Select the quick settings cluster in your taskbar and locate the Mobile hotspot quick action; you may need to select the Next page arrow to get to the second page of quick actions.

You can also do this by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot. Here, you can choose the Internet connection you want to share and edit the network name and password if desired.

Once you've enabled the mobile hotspot, you'll see the number of devices connected to your hotspot displayed in the quick action. To connect on another device, go to the Wi-Fi settings, find your network name, select it, enter the password, and then connect.

If you're having trouble with your laptop hotspot, make sure your Wi-Fi adapter supports hosted networks. You can check this in the command prompt by typing `netsh wlan show drivers` and looking for the line "Supported hosted networks" with a "Yes" behind it.

Additionally, you can use a third-party software like Connectify Hotspot to share your Internet connection and create a Wi-Fi hotspot. This software offers features like WiFi Repeater Mode, universal ad blocker, and WiFi Bridging Mode to help you share your Internet connection and improve your WiFi range.

Here are the steps to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot using Connectify Hotspot:

  1. Download and install the latest version of Connectify Hotspot on your PC or laptop.
  2. Give your Hotspot a Name (SSID) and Password, and even add Emojis and Special Characters to your Hotspot Name!
  3. Press the ‘Start Hotspot’ button to share your Internet connection and make sure you have the ad blocker option selected.
  4. Connect your phone to the Wi-Fi hotspot you created on your laptop.

Troubleshooting Your Connection

The hotspot option might be greyed out as soon as it's active, making it inaccessible.

This can happen if you're using WiFi and connect an Ethernet cable, resulting in a message saying "No Internet connection is available, but the mobile hotspot is still on."

To get the hotspot working again, you must deactivate it, change the setting for "Enable own internet connection from", and then reactivate the hotspot.

Your Wi-Fi adapter must support hosted networks to set up a hotspot.

You can check this in the command prompt by typing "netsh wlan show drivers" and looking for the line "Supported hosted networks" with a "Yes" behind it.

If it's not supported, you won't be able to set up a hotspot with that adapter.

The driver for your Wi-Fi adapter might also be a potential source of error.

Open the Control Panel and "Device Manager", then click on "Show hidden devices" and check the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter.

If it's not active, click on "Activate device" and update the drivers by clicking on "Update driver."

A slow internet connection while sharing your Wi-Fi might be due to the inefficiencies of Wi-Fi sharing.
