Setting up an OpenWrt Google Wifi router is a straightforward process that can be completed in a few simple steps. First, ensure your Google Wifi router is compatible with OpenWrt, as not all models support this firmware.

To begin the setup, download the OpenWrt firmware from the official website and follow the instructions to flash it onto your router. This process typically takes around 5-10 minutes to complete.

Once you've flashed the OpenWrt firmware, you'll need to configure your router's settings. This includes setting up your Wi-Fi network name, password, and other basic settings. The OpenWrt firmware provides a user-friendly interface for making these changes.

With your router set up, you can start exploring the various features and settings available in OpenWrt.

For your interest: Update Openwrt

Google

Google Wifi running OpenWRT is a great option for those looking to reuse older devices. I've had a pile of first generation Google Wifi units that I'm upgrading from to the latest Nest Wifi Pro.

All of the first generation Google Wifi units are router capable, unlike later iterations that had one unit as the router and others as repeaters only. This makes them ideal for running OpenWRT.

The SuzyQ cable is a magic cable that allows access to modify these and other older Google devices like Chromebooks. I was happy to find someone still making these.

The first generation Google Wifi units are USB-C powered, which is a requirement for doing this kind of work. I'm 95% sure I have the right hardware, which is a good thing.

GaleForce is a project to customize Google Wifi routers to gain root access, but it didn't quite offer the level of access I needed. I'm sticking with OpenWRT for now.

System

One of the standout features of OpenWRT is its ability to provide easy access to advanced network settings.

With OpenWRT, you can customize your network to suit your specific needs, giving you a high level of control over how your network operates.

OpenWRT allows you to access professional and advanced network settings with ease.

Router Features

The Router Features of OpenWRT Google Wifi are pretty impressive.

One of the standout features is its ability to support multiple Wi-Fi bands, including 2.4GHz and 5GHz. This allows for better performance and reduced interference.

You can also customize the firmware to prioritize traffic for specific devices or applications, which is useful for heavy internet users.

Mesh Network

Mesh Network is a powerful feature that allows you to connect multiple routers together to create a single, high-coverage network. This is perfect for homes with multiple floors or offices that need better coverage.

Google AC-1304 WiFi routers support Mesh Network technology, enabling you to create a seamless network with strong coverage. This feature is ideal for multi-story homes or offices with large areas to cover.

To set up a Mesh Network, you can follow these basic steps:

  1. Set up internet access on the device. You can plug the device into another router that already has internet or follow the steps to join an existing wireless network.
  2. Install the mesh packages.

Once you have the mesh packages installed, you can set up the mesh network using LUCI. This involves several steps, including configuring the LAN interface, disabling unnecessary services, and setting up the mesh wireless network.

Here's a brief overview of the steps involved in setting up the mesh network:

  1. Configure the LAN interface.
  2. (Optional) Disable unnecessary services. For secondary mesh devices, you can optionally disable some services that will be provided by the primary mesh device.
  3. Configure the mesh wireless network.
  4. Configure the wireless network for clients. Skip this step if you already have a wireless network for clients.

Install Hostapd and Network Card Firmware

To get the most out of your router's wireless capabilities, you'll need to install hostapd and firmware drivers for your network card(s). This is a crucial step in setting up your router's wireless features.

The first thing you'll need to do is search for "hostapd" in the web interface, under System->Software. From there, you'll need to install the kmod-ath9k and ath9k-htc-firmware packages. If you have a wle600vx or wle900vx network card, you'll need to install the ath10k-firmware-qca988x and kmod-ath10k packages instead.

Once you've installed the necessary packages, reboot your router to ensure the changes take effect. After rebooting, you should see a new menu item in Network -> Wireless.

The good news is that OpenWRT allows you to choose from many different channels for your wireless network, but most of these channels are a bad choice because they overlap on two or more standard channels. Here are the good channels to choose from:

Make sure to set the country code to your country, as some of these channels may not be permitted in your area. This will ensure that your wireless connection is stable and secure.

Benefits of Using a Router

Credit: youtube.com, Hub, Switch, & Router Explained - What's the difference?

Using a router can greatly enhance your online experience. You don't need a separate router at home, as most modems already function as simple routers.

If you want to use the internet more professionally or connect multiple devices over a wider area, you'll need a dedicated router.

A router can also connect to a VPN, allowing all devices connected to it to access the internet without restrictions.

Most simple routers only support outdated protocols like OPENVPN, PPTP, and L2TP, which are often blocked.

Benefits of Configured Routers

Buying a configured router has several advantages. One of the main benefits is that you get the latest version of Openwrt, specifically 23.05.5.

This means you'll have access to the latest features and security patches. Another benefit is that you get the latest versions of popular VPNs like Xray and singbox, as well as other useful tools like Passwall.

One of the most useful features of a configured router is the ability to split traffic between Iran and international websites. This is especially useful when using a VPN, as you can access Iranian websites without affecting your international internet usage.

Here are some specific benefits of a configured router:

  • Latest version of Openwrt (23.05.5)
  • Latest versions of VPNs like Xray, singbox, and Passwall
  • Ability to split traffic between Iran and international websites
  • Useful for users with Iranian internet packages, as it doesn't count Iranian websites towards their package limits

The operating frequency should be set to AC mode, Channel 36, Width: 80MHz, with a Transmit power of 23 dBm (199mW).

You'll also need to set the ESSID to TekLagerAC, Wireless security to WPA2-PSK, Key to TekLager123, and Country code to SE, as some channels may not be permitted in your country.

To choose the best wireless channel, consider using channels 36, 52, 100, 116, 132, 149 for 80MHz width, or channels 36, 44, 52, 60, 100, 108, 116, 124, 132, 140, 149, 157 for 40MHz width.

Here are the "good" channels for 80MHz and 40MHz widths:

Remember to set the country code to your country to ensure compliance with local regulations.

Advanced Configuration

To access advanced configuration options, you'll need to use the LuCI web interface, which can be accessed by opening a web browser and navigating to the router's IP address, typically 192.168.8.1.

The LuCI interface allows you to modify various settings, including network configuration and system settings.

To enable SSH access, you'll need to navigate to the System > Administration page and check the box next to "Enable SSH".

Rooting your router requires some elbow grease, literally. You'll need a screwdriver to get started, which might be a surprise if you're used to more straightforward setup processes.

The process involves precise button presses and the use of a USB-C adapter with Power Delivery. This is where things can get a bit fiddly, so be prepared to get your hands dirty.

Once you've got everything set up, you can insert a USB drive with the GaleForce software on it and SSH into your Google Wifi like a pro. This hack is a game-changer, especially if you want to keep your router up to date with the latest features and security patches.

GaleForce is designed to work seamlessly with Google's automatic updates, so you don't have to worry about losing your custom settings or configuration. It's a win-win situation that gives you the flexibility of a Linux box while still enjoying the convenience of Google's mesh networking and app-based interface.

Free Internet Access
