NordVPN OpenVPN UDP: A Comprehensive Setup Tutorial

Setting up NordVPN's OpenVPN UDP protocol can seem daunting, but don't worry, it's easier than you think.

First, you'll need to download and install the OpenVPN client from the official NordVPN website. This will give you access to the OpenVPN UDP protocol, which is a fast and secure way to connect to the internet.

If you're using an Android device, you'll need to scroll down to the settings option, click on it, and then choose VPN protocol. Finally, select the OpenVPN (TCP) protocol.

For iOS devices, click on the profile icon, then settings in the top right corner, choose protocol, and select the OpenVPN (TCP) protocol.

If you're using a Linux device, you can either use the GUI and select the OpenVPN (TCP) protocol in the settings, or use the terminal and type the command 'nordvpn set protocol tcp'.

To set up NordVPN on your Raspberry Pi, you'll need to update your system and install the necessary software. This includes openvpn and unzip.

After unzipping the files, you'll need to copy the configuration file to the correct location. The file /etc/openvpn/ovpn_udp/it195.nordvpn.com.udp.ovpn needs to be copied to /etc/openvpn/it195.conf.

To set up automatic authentication with NordVPN, go to https://my.nordaccount.com/dashboard/nordvpn/.

Copy your Service credentials from the manual setup inside /etc/openvpn/auth.txt, where the first line is your username and the second line is your password.

Inside /etc/openvpn/ovpn_udp/it195.nordvpn.com.udp.ovpn, change the line auth-user-pass to auth-user-pass /etc/openvpn/auth.txt.

This will allow OpenVPN to establish a connection to the NordVPN server using the credentials stored in /etc/openvpn/auth.txt.

NordVPN can hand out 10.x.x.x address space, which may cause issues if there's a subnet overlap.

To access LAN resources, the NordVPN interface needs to be disabled or configured properly.

Disabling pull routes in the NordVPN settings is a common solution, but it didn't fix the issue in this case.

The local address in the screenshot is the ISP router's LAN network, and the virtual address is 10.100.0.2, assuming it's a /24 network (10.100.0.1 - 10.100.0.254).

NordVPN uses multiple connection methods, including OpenVPN (TCP & UDP) and NordLynx. To change the connection method, head to the gear icon, auto-connect, and choose a VPN protocol.

NordVPN's OpenVPN (UDP) uses UDP ports 1194, 1231-1234, but it also needs UDP port 443 open on the internet. NordLynx, on the other hand, uses UDP port 51820 by default.

If you're having trouble with NordLynx connections, try allowing UDP port 51820 in your firewall settings. Some users have reported success with this.

Blocking QUIC traffic might also affect NordVPN connections, as some NordVPN servers use the same port as QUIC. If you block QUIC, you might not see NordVPN traffic in your logs.
