NK.pl: A Story of Success and Failure

NK.pl was a Polish online auction site that gained significant popularity in the early 2000s. It was launched in 2000 and quickly became one of the leading e-commerce platforms in Poland.

NK.pl's success was largely due to its user-friendly interface and the vast array of products available for bidding. The site offered a wide range of goods, from electronics and fashion items to collectibles and rare books.

However, NK.pl's success was short-lived, and the site eventually faced financial difficulties. By 2008, NK.pl had filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations.

NK.pl was launched on November 11, 2006, by four college students studying computer science at the University of Wrocław. They were Maciej Popowicz, Paweł Olchawa, Michał Bartoszkiewicz, and Łukasz Adziński.

The website's name came from the song "Nasza Klasa" by Jacek Kaczmarski. It was headquartered in Wrocław, Poland.

NK.pl enjoyed significant success, with 13.5 million active users in 2009. A study that year called it a "model example of the 'rags to riches' ideal of an enterprise construed with no financial funding and no institutional support".

By 2009, the service had become one of the top five websites used in Poland, behind Google.pl, Onet.pl, and Wirtualna Polska. It was visited by more than 50% of Polish Internet users each month.

In 2010, NK.pl underwent a rebranding, changing its name from nasza-klasa.pl to nk.pl. This marked a significant shift away from its origins as a school-focused social network.

The rebranding included the introduction of new features, such as NKtalk, mikroblog, wpisy, grupy, śledzik, ocenianie zdjęć, and gry. However, this change sparked controversy over the company's new terms of use, which allowed for the commercial use of users' profile photos and personal information.

This led to a significant drop in user numbers, with many users switching to Facebook. By 2014, the number of registered users had plummeted to less than 7 million.

In November 2014, Ringier Axel Springer Polska signed an agreement to buy NK.pl from Excolimp Investments.

Liczba użytkowników NK.pl spadała z roku na rok praktycznie przez dekadę, po tym jak do gry wkroczył Facebook.

W połowie 2020 roku było już mniej niż milion osób, które korzystały z Naszej Klasie.

Odnoklassniki.ru, a Russian service, was actually launched about six months before NK.pl and is often considered its inspiration.

It's still active today, making it one of the longest-running social media channels out there.
