If you're planning to upgrade, it's worth getting a 5G phone so you're future-proofed, even if you don't have 5G coverage where you are now.
You can consider the iPhone SE (2020) if you're happy with 4G, but most flagships and many mid-rangers now come with 5G, so you don't necessarily have to spend extra to get it.

Should I buy an iPhone?

If you're planning to upgrade, getting a 5G iPhone will future-proof you, and with all the latest iPhones supporting 5G, they're the obvious option to upgrade to.
You might be happy with Android, in which case there are many great 5G Android phones available, such as the OnePlus Nord CE4 Lite 5G and Moto G86 5G.
Some 5G Android phones are even cheaper than the iPhone 16e, making them a great option if you want to save money.
If you're happy with 4G, the iPhone SE (2020) is a relatively affordable option, but most flagships and many mid-rangers now come with 5G, so you don't necessarily have to spend extra to get it.
Time to Upgrade?
If you have a relatively recent iPhone with support for 4x4 MIMO and the key LTE bands that matter to your carrier, rushing to get on 5G will probably not reveal much real benefits at all until the various 5G networks have had more time to mature.
Verizon has only launched its 5G Nationwide network this week, and AT&T's long-range 5G is still at best "very good 4G" and is in many places actually slower than 4G.
The one potential exception is T-Mobile, which has a big head start in rolling out mid-band 5G that is aiming to cover 100 million Americans with truly next generation performance by the end of this year using the extensive mid-band spectrum holdings T-Mobile acquired by purchasing Sprint.
T-Mobile might be worthwhile sooner than on the other carriers if it delivers on its 5G network promises, but that's still a big IF.
Even outside of 5G coverage, the new iPhone should be absolutely exemplary as a 4G device.

If you're tempted by any of the other features of the iPhone 12, the 5G is just a bonus that will eventually pay off down the road.
