Hindustani

Hindustani is the common language of the northern Indian subcontinent, spoken by people in north India, eastern Pakistan, southern Nepal, and Bangladesh. It emerged as a result of the contact of Hindu and Muslim cultures during the Delhi Sultanate period.

The Hindustani vernacular became an expression of Indian national unity during the Indian Independence movement. This is reflected in the Hindustani vocabulary of Bollywood films and songs.

Standard Hindi is based on the language spoken in the Ganges-Yamuna Doab, called Khariboli. This dialect eventually replaced earlier prestige languages such as Awadhi and Braj.

John Gilchrist was a key figure in the study of the Hindustani language, which was adopted as the lingua franca of northern India by British colonists and indigenous people. He compiled and authored several important works on the language, including An English-Hindustani Dictionary.

In the late 19th century, a movement developed to standardize Hindi as a separate form of Hindustani, distinct from Urdu. This movement led to the adoption of Hindi as the sole official language of Bihar in 1881.

Independent

Independent India saw a significant milestone in the standardization of the Hindi language. In 1954, the Government of India set up a committee to prepare a grammar of Hindi.

The committee's report was released in 1958 as A Basic Grammar of Modern Hindi, providing a standardized framework for the language. This move aimed to bring uniformity in writing and improve the overall shape of Devanagari characters.

To further standardize the orthography, the Central Hindi Directorate of the Ministry of Education and Culture introduced diacritics to express sounds from other languages. This change aimed to improve the accuracy and clarity of written Hindi.

On 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi written in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Republic of India. This marked a significant shift from the previous usage of Hindustani in the Perso-Arabic script in the British Indian Empire.

Several stalwarts, including Beohar Rajendra Simha, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt, and Seth Govind Das, rallied in favour of Hindi and lobbied pan-India for its adoption. Their efforts finally came to fruition on 14 September 1949, which is now celebrated as Hindi Day.

Romanisation

The Government of India uses Hunterian transliteration as its official system of writing Hindi in the Latin script.

Romanised Hindi is the dominant form of Hindi online, with 52% of YouTube comments written in this format.

IAST, ITRANS, and ISO 15919 are other systems used for writing Hindi in the Latin script.

More than half of YouTube comments analyzed by Palakodety et al. were in Romanised Hindi.
