How to Use Instagram Video Chat Features

To use Instagram Video Chat features, you need to make sure you're running the latest version of the app. This will ensure you have access to all the latest features.

The first step is to find the person you want to video chat with, whether it's a friend or family member you're already connected with. You can do this by searching for their username or by looking through your contacts.

Once you've found the person, tap on their profile picture to start a video chat. You can also initiate a video chat from the direct messaging feature.

Starting a Chat

To start a chat on Instagram, tap the Messenger icon on the top right of the screen. This will take you to your direct messages where you can select people to chat with.

You can access Instagram Direct by swiping left, or by tapping the top right icon on your Feed. From there, you can select people from the list of message threads or click on Search to find the person you're looking for.

To start a video chat, click on the video camera icon to call a person or have a group video chat. Your friend will receive a notification that you're calling them.

Starting a New Chat

To start a new chat on Instagram, simply tap the Messenger icon on the top right of the screen.

You can also start a video chat with a single person or a group of up to six people by tapping the video camera icon.

To invite someone to a video chat, scroll through the list of Suggested friends or type a name under Invite to Video Chat. You can also search for someone and Instagram will present options of people you follow on Instagram, your Instagram followers, Facebook friends, and people on Instagram who match your search name.

If you want to include a mix of Instagram followers and Facebook friends in your video chat, you can scroll down to see a list of suggested Facebook Friends with whom you can also video chat.

To add someone to your video chat, tap their name.

Answering an Incoming Chat

Answering an incoming chat is straightforward. The other user or users will receive a notification with the option to join the video chat right away or decline.

If they're in the direct message thread already, their video camera icon will turn blue with an animated bubble around it. They can tap that to join or the message at the bottom that says "Tap to join."

If they don't answer the call, you'll be greeted by a "Didn't join" screen.

Chat Options

You can add up to six people to a video chat on Instagram. To do this, simply tap a person's name to add them to your video chat.

You can mix and match Instagram followers and Facebook friends in a single video chat. If you scroll down, you'll see a list of suggested Facebook Friends with whom you can also video chat, even if they don't have an Instagram account.

To remove someone from your video chat, tap the back button on your keyboard, then tap the X next to their name. This will take them out of the chat without ending the video call.

You can also add fun filters and effects to your video chat by tapping the Effects button. This is a great way to add some personality to your video calls.

If you want to include a photo or video in your video chat, you can tap the Media button. This will allow you to share media with the people in your video chat.

You can browse your feed while on an Instagram video call by clicking the top-left corner to minimize the screen.

Nobody can see your screen, so you can check posts without worrying about your friends seeing them.

Your friends will still be able to see your face, so you can stay connected while browsing.

If you want to take multitasking to the next level, you can also check posts along with your friends while on a video call.

Instagram's video chat feature lets you share posts directly in group video chats, making it easy to connect with friends while browsing.

Group Chat Options

You can connect with more than one person at a time on Instagram. You can video chat with up to 8 people.

To add more friends to a video call, create a chat thread with the people you want to involve. Tap on the video camera icon to call them.

If you're already in an ongoing video chat, tap on the icon showing multiple people to add another person in the chat. This instantly creates a new thread on Instagram Direct.

Adding a new person to the chat is a great way to catch up with friends and stay updated on each other's lives.
