To see who has access to a Google Doc, you can check the sharing settings.
The owner of the document can view a list of people who have been invited to edit or view the document.
This list includes the email addresses of the people with access, as well as their permission levels.
Setting Up Access
To see who has access to a Google Doc, you'll first need to check the file's permissions. A window will appear showing you all the people who have access to your file.
If you haven't shared the file with anyone, you'll only see yourself on the list. This is because Google Drive doesn't share files with anyone by default.
You can check the file's permissions by going to the file's settings. Here, you can see who has access to the file and what level of permission they have.
If other people have access to the file, you'll see their name, email address, and the level of permission they have on this list.
Managing Access
You can check who has access to a Google Doc by clicking on the file and looking at the list of people who have been granted permission.
If you haven't shared the file with anyone, you'll only see your own name on the list. If others have access, you'll see their name, email address, and the level of permission they have.
To add someone to the permissions list, click on the "Add people and groups" text field at the top of the page and type in their name or email address.
You can also edit and remove someone's permissions by clicking on the permission level next to their name and selecting a new role, such as "Viewer" or "Editor".
Here are some permission levels you can assign:
- Viewer: allows the person to view the file but not make changes
- Commenter: allows the person to make comments on the file
- Editor: allows the person to make changes to the file
If you want to know who has access to specific files, you can use the Google Drive Permissions Auditor add-on, which generates a comprehensive report revealing who has access to your shared files and what kind of permission they have.

The add-on works by scanning your entire Drive and writing the access details in a spreadsheet. You can then filter the report to see which files match certain criteria, such as public files or files modified since a certain date.
Some sample Google Drive search queries to help you find specific files include:
- "me" in owners and trashed = false (all files owned by you except those in trash)
- modifiedTime > '2022-01-01T12:00:00' (file modified since Jan 2022 UTC)
- mimeType = 'application/vnd.google-apps.spreadsheet' (scan the access permissions of only Google Spreadsheets in your Drive)
You can also use the add-on to find out who has edit, view, and comment permissions on specific files, as well as where the file is located in your Drive.
If you're a domain administrator, you can install the add-on for all users in your domain through the Google Apps Marketplace.
The add-on is free and lets you audit up to 200 files in your Drive. If you have more files, you can upgrade to the premium edition to analyze every single file and folder in your Drive.
