Having AirPods read text messages to you is a game-changer for anyone who's constantly on the go.

To get started, make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.

First, you need to enable the feature that allows your AirPods to read your text messages.

This can be done by going to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Speak Selection.

Next, make sure that the "Speak Messages" option is turned on.

How It Works

To have AirPods read text messages, you'll need to enable Announce Messages with Siri on your device. This feature allows Siri to read your incoming messages out loud.

Siri will read the message to you as soon as it arrives, as long as your device is locked and your AirPods or Beats headphones are connected. The announcement will begin with a tone, followed by the sender's name and then the content of the message.

There's a limit to the length of the message that Siri will read back, so if it's more than a sentence or two, Siri will simply tell you that you've received a new message and you'll need to ask Siri to read back the full message.

Activating Announce Notifications for Messages

To activate Announce Notifications for Messages, go to Settings, then Notifications, and tap Announce Notifications. From there, activate the first option, Announce notifications, and the second, Headphones.

You'll also need to enable the option for the Messages application. To do this, run down the list and tap the Messages option.

Once you've activated these options, you'll be able to hear Siri read the content of text messages when you have AirPods in your ears.

Managing Message Notifications

You can customize how Siri announces messages to suit your preferences. To avoid incoming message spam, change the "Announce Messages with Siri" feature by going to Settings > Notifications > Announce Messages from Siri and selecting a different option than "Everyone".

If you get a lot of spam messages, it's a good idea to choose "Favorites", "Recents", or "Contacts" instead. This will filter out unwanted messages from Siri's announcements.

You can quickly toggle "Announce Messages with Siri" on or off using a Control Center shortcut. To add it, go to Settings > Control Center and tap the plus button beside "Announce Messages with Siri".

To activate Announce Notifications on iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and activate the first two options: Announce notifications and Headphones.
