To publish a custom website on Google Sites, you'll need to start by creating a new site. This can be done by clicking on the "Start a new site" button on the Google Sites homepage.
You can choose from a variety of templates to get started, or create a blank site from scratch. I've found that starting with a template can be a great way to get a head start on designing your site.
Once you've chosen a template or created a blank site, you can start adding pages and content to your site. This includes text, images, and other media that will make up the bulk of your website.

If you want to use a custom URL, put it into the "Custom URL" area. Note that every Google Sites URL will begin with "https://sites.google.com/view" by default.
Here's a quick rundown of the default URL structure: if you wanted "businessinsider" as your URL, it would be "https://sites.google.com/view/businessinsider".
To set your site live and make it visible to others, click "Publish" again after finishing your site. This will make your site live and accessible to the public.

Design and Content
To change the layout, text, and images on your Google Sites webpage, head to the right-hand sidebar and click on Insert. This is where you'll do the majority of the building for your new website.
You can change the text on your screen by clicking on it and using the backspace key to erase the old text, then replacing it with new text. For example, you can change "Your Page Title" to "My First Project".
To add a block underneath the main header, click on the first layout option in the Layouts section of your right sidebar, which has a single picture of a mountain. This will add a blank template underneath the main header.
You can add an image by clicking on the plus sign in the box, then selecting Google Image Search to find your favorite animal. For instance, you can search for a duck and find an image to load onto your webpage.
Each theme on Google Sites has a combination of a typeface, a selection of colors, and a few graphic design elements. You can try clicking on the themes one by one to see how it changes your webpage, and then adjust the colors and font styles to fit your mood and style.

Add More Pages
Adding more pages to your website is a breeze in Google Sites. Click on the last option in the right-hand sidebar, which is the "Pages" section.
You'll see that you currently only have one page for your site. To fix that, look down and find the blue "+" sign nested inside a white circle. Click on it to add another page.
Give this new page a name, like "More Animal Facts". You'll be back to the start of another page that looks similar to the one you started with. Navigate to the Insert section of the right-hand sidebar, and you can follow the same steps as before to change the layout, text, and images.
If you insert a layout option that you don't like, just hover over it and look for the trash can option that shows up to its left. That's the delete key for anything you don't want on your page anymore.
You can also start getting into Google Sites by scrolling down further in the Insert section and exploring options like a table of contents, navigation menu, dividers, image carousel, placeholders, and even an option to insert a YouTube video directly into your site.

Publish Your Site
Publishing your site is a crucial step in making it visible to the public. You can do this by clicking on the blue "Publish" button on the top right of your screen.
The first time you publish your site, you'll be prompted to enter a unique folder name where your Google site will exist. This will determine the web address of your site, such as sites.google.com/view/mywebsite.
If you're serious about going into business with your website, you might want to consider a website builder or e-commerce solution. But for now, let's focus on getting your site published.
To publish your site, click on the big blue "Publish" button in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. This will bring up a simple dialogue box where you can choose the web address you'd like your project to live at, as well as a few custom options.
If you need something accessible but not a branded public project, you can use the default domain that Google provides – sites.google.com/yourproject. It's not super-brandable, but it works.

- Choose the web address you'd like your project to live at

That's it! Your site is now live and visible to the public.
Review and Finalize
You can view how your site will look on different devices using the preview button in the top right of the editor.
Once you're happy with your site, you can specify your domain name, which will take the form of sites.google.com/view/yoursitenamehere, unless you have a domain of your own already.
This allows you to link your site to your own domain if you have one, or use the default Google Sites domain.
You can also specify your site to only be viewable to certain people, or only to people who have the direct link, which can be useful for getting feedback from people you trust.
After finalizing your site, all that's left to do is hit the 'Publish' button.
