Features and Capabilities

The Haven app is a powerful tool that offers a range of features and capabilities to help keep you safe and secure.

It can detect motion and send app alerts to users, allowing you to stay informed about potential security threats.

The app can also record set periods of time, hear/record sound, and detect physical phone movement, such as an intruder banging on the walls.

Here are the sensors monitored by Haven for a measurable change, and then recorded to an event log on the device:

  • Accelerometer: phone’s motion and vibration
  • Camera: motion in the phone’s visible surroundings from front or back camera
  • Microphone: noises in the environment
  • Light: change in light from ambient light sensor
  • Power: detect device being unplugged or power loss

Functionality

The Haven app is quite impressive in terms of its functionality. It can detect motion, which is a great feature for keeping an eye on things when you're not around.

One of the most useful features is its ability to send app alerts to users, so you'll always know what's going on. This can be especially helpful if you're away from home for an extended period.

The app can also record set periods of time, which is useful for capturing evidence if something suspicious happens. This feature is only active when you've specifically set a recording period.

Another cool feature is its ability to hear and record sound, but only when you've set a recording period. If the app detects motion, it will alert your phone or send an SMS instead.

The Haven app can also detect physical phone movement, such as if someone is banging on the walls. This feature can be a real lifesaver in a situation where you need to know what's going on.

Limitations

The Haven app has some limitations to consider. The app requires a SIM card to send SMS alerts, which is an important thing to keep in mind.

One of the biggest limitations is that there is no live feed, which means you won't be able to see what's happening in real-time.

The app only records events if you set it to record a specific period of time, so you need to make sure you have that set up correctly.

Video and sound quality depend on the device's video and microphone quality, which can vary depending on the device you're using.

Safety Through Sensors

Haven only records when triggered by sound and motion and stores everything locally on the device. This means your personal data stays private and secure.

The Haven app uses a variety of sensors to detect motion and sound. These sensors include the accelerometer, camera, microphone, light sensor, and power sensor. The accelerometer detects phone motion and vibration, the camera captures motion in the phone's visible surroundings, and the microphone detects noises in the environment.

Here are the specific sensors monitored by Haven:

  • Accelerometer: phone’s motion and vibration
  • Camera: motion in the phone’s visible surroundings from front or back camera
  • Microphone: noises in the environment
  • Light: change in light from ambient light sensor
  • Power: detect device being unplugged or power loss

Haven can be configured to capture visible motion or listen for noises discreetly. You can position the device's camera to capture motion or place your phone somewhere quiet to listen for sounds.

Using the App

To use the Haven app, you'll want to start by configuring the sensors on your device to detect intrusions. The app's main view allows you to select which sensors to use along with their corresponding levels of sensitivity.

You'll also need to set a security code to disable monitoring, which must be provided by you. This ensures that only authorized users can turn off the app's monitoring feature.

If you want to receive alerts when sensors are triggered, you can set a phone number in the app. A message will be sent to that number if any of the sensors are triggered, keeping you informed and secure.

No iPhone Support?

You might be wondering why Haven doesn't support iPhone devices yet.

Unfortunately, direct iPhone support isn't available, but there's a workaround.

You can purchase an inexpensive Android phone for less than $100 and use it as your "Haven Device".

This will allow you to still benefit from Haven's features.

You can also configure Haven on Android to send encrypted notifications, with photos and audio, directly to your iPhone if you run Signal.

This way, you can stay connected and receive important information.

If you enable the "Tor Onion Service" feature in Haven, you can remotely access all Haven log data from your iPhone using the Onion Browser app.

This requires installing the "Orbot" app as well.

So, iPhone users, don't worry, you haven't been forgotten!

Usage

Haven is designed to guide you through the process of setting up your device to detect potential intrusions.

The current implementation has some features that help with this, but the team is working to improve the user experience.

You'll need to configure the sensors on your device to get the most out of Haven.

The goal is to make this process as seamless as possible, so you can focus on what matters most.

By following the prompts and setting up your device correctly, you'll be well on your way to a more secure environment.

Main View

The main view of the app is where you'll spend most of your time. From here, you can select which sensors to use and adjust their sensitivity levels.

To get started, you'll need to choose the sensors you want to monitor. This will help you tailor the app to your specific needs.

A security code is required to disable monitoring, which must be provided by the user. This ensures that monitoring can only be stopped by the person who set it up.

You can also set up a phone number to receive a message if any of the sensors are triggered. This way, you'll always know if something is amiss, even when you're not in front of your device.

Security and Trust

Haven provides a secure and private way to store sensitive information. Its encryption is based on the Signal Protocol, which is considered one of the most secure encryption methods available.

This means that even Haven's developers can't access your data, not even with a court order. The encryption is designed to be unbreakable, making it an ideal solution for storing sensitive information.

Haven's encryption is also end-to-end, which means that only you and the person you're sharing with can read the encrypted data. This ensures that your data remains private and secure at all times.

The encryption process is also very fast, making it easy to use and convenient. You can store and share sensitive information without worrying about it being compromised.
