FTP access through Chrome is a convenient way to transfer files between your computer and a remote server. This method is particularly useful for web developers and designers who need to upload files to a website.
The Chrome browser has a built-in FTP client that allows you to connect to an FTP server and upload files. This client is accessible through the Chrome settings menu.
You can access the FTP client by going to Chrome's settings menu, clicking on "Advanced", and then selecting "Open in new tab." From there, you can enter the FTP server details and upload files.

Why FTP Access is Limited
Browser teams didn't want to maintain FTP code, which led to its removal in popular browsers like Firefox and Google Chrome.
Firefox dropped FTP support in version 90, released in July 2021, and Google Chrome removed FTP support in Version 88 (January 2021), with its FTP code being entirely removed in Version 95 in October 2021.

Only a small percentage of users, about 0.32%, opened a FTP link at least once, as measured by Mozilla over the course of a year (2019-2020), with about 700,000 monthly active Firefox users out of 220 million monthly active users doing so.
This limited usage likely contributed to the decision to remove FTP support in popular browsers.

Browser Teams Didn't Want to Maintain Code
Browser teams didn't want to maintain FTP code because it was taking up resources that could be better spent on more modern and widely used technologies.
Firefox and Chrome, two of the most popular browsers, dropped FTP support in recent versions. Firefox dropped it in version 90, released in July 2021, while Chrome removed it in version 88, released in January 2021.
Chrome's decision to remove FTP support was not taken lightly. It first toyed with the idea in 2018, but held off due to user feedback.
Mozilla measured that only about 0.32% of Firefox's 220 million monthly active users opened a FTP link at least once in 2020.
Despite this low usage, there are still some FTP users out there.

FTP Connection Requires Credentials
To access files on an FTP site that requires a username and password, you can start the connection like you would for an anonymous FTP connection. Simply type ftp://ftp.xyz.com and press Enter.
A password dialog box will appear, where you need to fill in your user name and password if required. This is a security measure to ensure only authorized users can access the files.
There are a few ways to do this type of FTP connection with your browser. One way is to use the File menu in Internet Explorer. From the File menu, select Login As.
In the Log On As dialog, type your username and password. Then, click Log In to complete the login process.
