Instagram and Facebook are more connected than you might think. In fact, if you have a Facebook account and connect it with your Instagram account, your Instagram posts will automatically be shared on your Facebook timeline.

This is because of a feature called "Facebook integration" that allows you to share your Instagram posts with your Facebook friends. According to Instagram's terms, when you connect your Facebook account with Instagram, your posts will be shared on your Facebook timeline.

But here's the thing: not all Instagram posts will be shared on Facebook. Only posts that are shared on Instagram's "Feed" will be shared on Facebook. Instagram Stories, on the other hand, will not be shared on Facebook, unless you specifically choose to share them.

You can control which posts are shared on Facebook by going to your Instagram settings and adjusting the "Share to Facebook" option.

Cross-Posting to Facebook

To cross-post your Instagram content to Facebook, you'll need to have a few things in place. First, you'll need an Instagram account - this will be the source of the posts you want to share on Facebook.

You'll also need to use one of the Instagram apps, either the iOS or Android app, to perform the cross-posting steps. Unfortunately, you can't do this through the desktop platform or using third-party apps.

Having a Facebook account is a no-brainer, but make sure you know your username and password so you can access your account.

If you want to post to a business Page, you'll need to have an Admin role for that Page. Only the Admin can enable cross-posting, and only the account owned by the Admin on Instagram can be the source of the posts.

You don't need to convert your Instagram profile to a Business Profile to cross-post, but if you're doing this for business purposes, it's worth considering the extra features that come with a Business Profile.

Stopping Automatic Posts

Instagram started prompting users to share photos automatically to Facebook with a big blue button to opt in and a smaller link without a button to opt out, making it easy to accidentally share photos to Facebook.

Many users click the blue button to close the prompt as quickly as possible, only to find their Instagram photos becoming Facebook posts later on.

To keep your Instagram photos from automatically showing up on your Facebook profile, head to the Instagram app and go to your profile.

Tap the three bars in the upper-right corner, and then scroll down to the Account option under Settings.

From there, select Sharing to Other Apps to see if your Instagram profile is linked to your Facebook account.

You can unlink your profiles entirely to prevent automatic cross-sharing by tapping Facebook under Sharing to Other Apps and selecting Unlink Account.

This makes it impossible for Stories, Reels, or grid posts to show up on your Facebook page unless you go out of your way to relink the two profiles.

If you'd like to keep the option to share certain posts to Facebook, you can deactivate automatic cross-sharing without unlinking the accounts by toggling off the types of posts you'd like to restrict to your Instagram profile.

Sharing on Instagram

Sharing on Instagram is a straightforward process. You can share your Instagram posts on Facebook by connecting your accounts, which allows all your instant or scheduled posts to appear on your Facebook profile and feed.

To connect your accounts, go to Settings and privacy > Accounts Center > Sharing across profiles and select your Instagram account. Only a professional account can link to a Facebook page, and it can be either a Business or Creator type.

If you want to share your Instagram Reels on Facebook, you can do so by tapping the Share to Facebook toggle switch when preparing to post. This setting only applies to the current post and not future posts.

You can also share your Instagram photos and videos to Facebook by following these steps: open Instagram, select a photo or video, edit it, type a caption, and then tap the Share to Facebook toggle switch. This is a one-time setting for each post, so you'll need to toggle it on for each photo or video you want to share.
