Only one (1) usable IP because the highest host address (.186) is automatically assigned by Comcast to the Business Gateway WAN Internet IP address.

Only five (5) usable IP because the highest host address (.190) is automatically assigned by Comcast to the Business Gateway WAN Internet IP address.

Keep in mind that the highest usable IP address is always assigned to the Business Gateway WAN interface, so you'll need to account for that when planning your network.

Pseudo Bridge Mode

Pseudo Bridge Mode allows your firewall/router to provide LAN DHCP, NAT, port forwarding, VPN, etc. functions under your control.

To configure pseudo bridge mode, you'll need to connect your computer to a LAN port on the gateway and log in with a web browser. The admin page can be accessed at http://10.1.10.1, using the username cusadmin and password highspeed.

Clicking Gateway Summary → Network will display the Internet and Local network settings. Comcast automatically assigns the highest useable IP address, e.g. 173.xxx.yyy.186, to the Gateway WAN Internet IP Address.

Your Static IP Block in CIDR notation (/30) is also displayed.

Linksys Router Configuration

To configure your Linksys router for Comcast Xfinity's static IP, you'll need to access the router's admin page. Log into the Linksys WiFi router at http://192.168.1.1, unless you've changed the IP address like I did for added security.

The first step in the configuration process is to select the Internet Connection Type. Go to the Setup→Basic Setup menu and choose Static IP from the dropdown.

You'll need to fill in the Internet IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway with the parameters specified in the email from Comcast. For example, the IP address might be 173.xxx.yy.185, the gateway might be 173.xxx.yy.186, and the subnet mask is typically 255.255.255.252.

Don't forget to enter your DNS service IP address values, or use the Comcast DNS IPs if you prefer. I used 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for Google DNS and 208.67.222.222 for OpenDNS.

Remote Access

Remote access to your LAN clients via a static IP address is a game-changer for remote monitoring and management.

To enable remote access, you'll need to subscribe to Comcast's Static IP Service, which will give you an Internet routable static IP address.

Configuring pseudo-bridge mode on the Comcast IP Gateway is also required, which involves disabling the gateway's firewall, NAT, and DHCP features.

After configuring pseudo-bridge mode, the DDNS agent in your router can update the Dyn Remote Access service with the Internet routable WAN IP address.

To access your LAN clients, you can use the static IP address or a DDNS host name and port forwarding, e.g., https://myhost.homedns.org:443 or https://173.xxx.yy.185:443.

Remote Internet Access Issue

If you're experiencing issues with remote internet access, it's likely due to the Comcast Business IP Gateway operating in Router Mode. This assigns a 10.1.10.x private IP address to the Linksys router WAN interface.

The problem is that this private IP address is not Internet routable, making it impossible to access your network remotely. To resolve this issue, you'll need to subscribe to Comcast's Static IP Service.

Comcast Business Class Internet requires a NETGEAR CG3000DCR IP Gateway, which is a cable modem and router combo that runs custom firmware. However, this gateway does not support true Bridge Mode.

Instead, you'll need to configure the gateway for pseudo-bridge mode, which disables the firewall, NAT, and DHCP features. This will allow the DDNS agent in the Linksys router to update the Dyn Remote Access service with the Internet routable WAN IP address.

To do this, you'll need to call Comcast and request that they remotely reconfigure the gateway for you. They will also need to activate the Static IP address, which can take 3 to 5 business days.

Once the Static IP address is activated, you'll need to configure the Linksys router to forward traffic to the correct port. This can be done using a DDNS host name and port forwarding, or by using the static IP address directly.

Here are the steps to configure pseudo-bridge mode on the Comcast IP Gateway:

  • Call Comcast and request that they remotely reconfigure the gateway for pseudo-bridge mode.
  • Activate the Static IP address, which can take 3 to 5 business days.
  • Configure the Linksys router to forward traffic to the correct port using a DDNS host name and port forwarding, or by using the static IP address directly.

Remote LAN Access

Remote LAN Access is a powerful feature that allows you to access your local area network (LAN) clients from anywhere in the world.

You can access your LAN clients by mapping Internet requests from a static IP address to a private LAN IP address, using a dynamic DNS (DDNS) host name and port.

For example, you can access your LAN clients via a DDNS host name and port, such as https://myhost.homedns.org:443.

Alternatively, you can access your LAN clients directly with the static WAN IP address of your router, such as https://173.xxx.yyy.185:443.

Unused ports can be assigned to LAN clients to avoid conflicts with other network services, and can be configured in the future for access to devices like the CG3000DCR gateway.

Business Customers and Modems

Business customers can choose from two types of modems: a cable modem and a DOCSIS modem.
