Setting Up CDN in WordPress

To set up a CDN in WordPress, start by adding your website to Cloudflare. Click the 'Add a website or application' button to get started.

You'll need to enter your website's domain name, such as example.com, into the 'Enter your site' field. Don't type the full URL or any extra characters.

Next, you'll be asked to choose the type of Cloudflare plan you want. Review the list to ensure your primary domain is active on Cloudflare with an orange cloud icon.

To activate Cloudflare, simply click the 'Proxy status' toggle to change the status. This will update your domain nameservers and activate Cloudflare in a few minutes.

Once activated, you'll see a success message in your Cloudflare dashboard.

Configuring Cloudflare for Blogger

To configure Cloudflare for Blogger, you need to enable the free HTTPS (SSL Certificate) for your custom domain name. This will start working in less than 24 hours and your blog should not experience any downtime.

You'll need to properly forward blog pages using 301 redirects, which can take a few hours to see the changes. You can do this using page rules in Cloudflare.

Using page rules, you can redirect all blog pages from HTTP to the HTTPS version of your blog, including home page, post page, static page, and subdomains. Just wait till your nameservers finish propagating before setting page rules.

Point Custom Domain to Blogger via DNS

To point your custom domain to Blogger via DNS, start by logging into Cloudflare.com and creating an account if you don't already have one.

Click on Add a Site and enter your domain name to begin the process.

Cloudflare will scan your domain and show you the nameservers that need to be updated in your Domain Control Panel.

Change the nameservers assigned for your account to the ones provided by Cloudflare, which in my case are amy.ns.cloudflare.com and theo.ns.cloudflare.com, but may be different for your account.

Go back to your Cloudflare dashboard and click on the DNS tab to add the necessary records.

Add the CNAME records generated by Blogger, making sure to click on Proxied (Proxy Status) and use the lowest TTL of 2 minutes while adding them.

Delete any previous records you may have, and the final DNS setting should look like the image provided.

Add all four IP addresses as A Records type in Cloudflare, using the @ symbol in the Name field and targeting the IP address.

After your domain is successfully added, click on Edit and enable redirection to complete the process.

Configuring Additional Settings

You've completed the Quick Start Guide, but there's still more to do to get the most out of Cloudflare. To start, make sure you've installed and activated the Cloudflare plugin on your website.

This plugin will give you access to the Cloudflare settings on your dashboard, which you'll need to configure properly. For now, leave the Automatic HTTPS Rewrites setting on, as this will help avoid mixed content errors in WordPress.

The Always Use HTTPS setting, on the other hand, is best left disabled, at least for now. This setting has been known to cause issues with some users, and we'll show you a better way to redirect from HTTP to HTTPS later.

Brotli compression is a good thing to have on, as it can unlock 15-20% speed improvements. Make sure you've clicked the 'Save' button to store this setting.

Here are the key settings you should have configured so far:

  • Automatic HTTPS Rewrites: ON
  • Always Use HTTPS: OFF
  • Brotli: ON

Now that you've completed the Quick Start Guide, it's time to move on to the next step. Keep an eye out for our next section, where we'll show you how to redirect from HTTP to HTTPS using the All in One SEO plugin.

Moving to Cloudflare Pages

I recently made the switch to Cloudflare Pages, and I'm excited to share my experience with you. Cloudflare Pages is a free hosting platform that's designed to make it easy to host your blog.

One of the main reasons I chose Cloudflare Pages is that it's free, which aligns with my requirement not to pay for a hobbyist blog. Heroku, on the other hand, wanted me to pay for an SSL certificate for a custom domain, which was a deal-breaker.

Cloudflare Pages has made the process of hosting my blog incredibly easy, which was a pleasant surprise. I was able to port my existing blog over with minimal issues, although I did encounter some caveats due to Blogger's permalink naming scheme.

Some images from my old blog aren't fully compatible with Cloudflare Pages, but they're not critical to the content of my blog. If you're considering making the switch, be aware that you may encounter similar issues.

Cloudflare Pages also handles DNS management for me, which has been surprisingly painless. I'm now able to take advantage of free hosting and TLS/SSL certificate management, which is a great bonus.

Here are some of the benefits of using Cloudflare Pages:

  • Free hosting
  • TLS/SSL certificate management
  • Easy DNS management
  • No need to pay for an SSL certificate
