You can use third-party DNS servers like Cloudflare, Google, or Quad9. Here are some popular options:

This warning page gives you the option to add an exception for that domain if you want to use the system DNS resolver.

To take advantage of Max Protection, you'll need to enable DNS over HTTPS (DoH) in your browser settings.

Changing DNS over HTTPS settings can have some risks to consider.

Some individuals and organizations rely on DNS to block malware, enable parental controls, or filter your browser's access to websites. DoH bypasses these special policies, which can be a problem.

Configuring Settings

To configure your DNS over HTTPS settings, you'll want to start by clicking the menu button at the top right of the screen. This will open up a dropdown menu.

You can enable DNS over HTTPS on Windows 11, but it's not the first time Microsoft has tested this feature. It first appeared in the Windows 10 preview build 20185 for Windows Insiders but was pulled back quickly.

To access the DNS over HTTPS settings, you can simply search for "dns" in the Settings search tool. This will take you directly to the relevant settings page.

There are three options for DNS over HTTPS: Unencrypted only, Encrypted only, and Encrypted preferred, unencrypted only. The Encrypted preferred, unencrypted only option is a good compromise, as it will switch to standard unencrypted DNS if no DoH servers are available.

Microsoft has provided a short list of DNS over HTTPS servers that can be used by default on Windows 11. Some popular options include Cloudflare, which is selected by default.

The netsh command is: netsh dns add encryption server=[resolver-IP-address] dohtemplate=[resolver-DoH-template] autoupgrade=yes udpfallback=no.
