Installing WiFi for Homeless Students

The Austin Independent School District is taking a huge step to bridge the digital divide in education by installing free WiFi towers to connect students without internet access at home. This initiative, called Project Lighthouse, aims to provide private internet access to around 25,000 students.

About 30% of AISD students don't have reliable high-speed internet, which is a significant issue that District 1 councilwoman Natasha Harper-Madison recognizes. She believes that broadband should be accessible to everyone in the city, regardless of where they live.

The monopole towers will be up to 120 feet in height and provide internet access within a one-mile radius of each campus. This means that students and their families will have access to free WiFi, limited to AISD students and their families.

The partnership with Branch Communications will construct and maintain the monopoles at no cost to the district or city. In exchange, Branch will be allowed to utilize the tower to install equipment for mobile carriers, such as Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, that wish to extend their cell coverage in the areas where the campuses are located.
