The company plans to offer AOL TotalTalk, a residential VoIP service, to all high-speed internet users in Canada, starting with the greater Toronto area and then expanding throughout the country.

AOL TotalTalk will include features such as free unlimited subscriber-to-subscriber calling and 60 minutes of North American talk time per month, for $16.10 during a three-month introductory phase, increasing to $28.20 a month after that.

Canada is projected to have 1.1 million VoIP users by 2007, up from the current 29,000 Canadians using VoIP.

AOL Canada also offers a freely accessible web portal at aol.ca, which provides videos, music, news, and other features, in an effort to compete with other online portals like Sympatico.MSN.ca and Yahoo.ca.

Voip

Voip is gaining momentum in Canada, with 29,000 Canadians already using it and a projected 1.1 million users by 2007.

AOL Canada is one of the latest players to jump on the VoIP bandwagon, offering a residential service called AOL TotalTalk that uses voice over Internet Protocol.

The service will be available to all high-speed Internet users, not just AOL subscribers, and will include features like free unlimited subscriber-to-subscriber calling and 60 minutes of North American talk time per month.

You can use a TotalTalk phone number anywhere you can access a high-speed Internet connection, and even locate the VoIP subscriber at up to three locations.

The service will cost $16.10 during a three-month introductory phase and then increase to $28.20 a month, which is a relatively affordable price for a service that offers so much.

Canada's VoIP market is becoming increasingly competitive, with industry titans like AT&T and start-up services like Vonage and Net2Phone already offering VoIP services.

AOL Goes Wireless

AOL is taking a big leap into the wireless world, and it's starting in Canada. They're launching a fixed wireless network in Toronto, built through a joint venture with Allstream, Inukshuk Internet, and NR Communications.

The technology used is more reliable and easy to use than other fixed wireless solutions like Wi-Fi and Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS). It uses a licensed band of radio frequency for transmission, which is a big improvement.

Unlike Wi-Fi, this network doesn't require a line-of-sight connection between the transmitter and the receiver. This means it can work around objects or weather conditions that might interfere with the signal.

The technology also doesn't need an external antenna or software to be downloaded. The device at the customer site configures itself and provides immediate access to the Internet, no technician required.

AOL Canada expects downstream transmission rates of around 2 megabits per second, which is slightly better than their current DSL network.
