Phone Update Schedule

Google's Pixel phones were among the first to get Android 13.

Samsung followed soon after, but some of its flagships, such as those from Nokia and Motorola, have yet to receive updates as of February 2023.

Most phones from popular brands like Samsung Galaxy, Asus, HMD (Nokia phones), iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi are either already running Android 13 or expected to get it in 2023.

Some of these brands, including Nokia and Motorola, have flagships that are still waiting for the update despite having a "stock" Android interface.

Why Do Some Phones Take So Long to Get Updates?

Android updates can be slow to roll out, but it's not just Google's fault. Google develops Android, including its new updates, but smartphone manufacturers create their own version of the update, called a skin.

Credit: youtube.com, Samsung's Updated One UI Software Update Schedule - Where Is Your Phone On This List

One example is Samsung's "One UI" and OnePlus's "OxygenOS", both of which are variations of the same underlying Android version. These skins tweak Android to fit particular devices and ecosystems.

Smartphone manufacturers have different priorities and timelines, which can lead to delays in updating their devices. Google has made strides in improving Android adoption, but it's still a complex process.

The only way to guarantee the latest version of Android is to buy a Pixel, Google's own line of phones.
