Prodcut Description: [More Information ...] One must assume that Christopher Lambert signed a contract forcing him to make this second sequel to the 1986 cult film Highlander. Unless he was paid an enormous amount of money, there is no explanation for his appearance in this abysmal movie. The original feature, which was graced with the presence of Sean Connery, was a critical yawn but attracted a cult following on the strength of its supernatural story line. An overproduced and muddled sequel followed, as well as a syndicated TV series and a video flick spliced together from the series. One would think audiences had had enough of this clansman who can die only if decapitated. This installment begins 400 years ago, when Lambert is in Japan perfecting his swordsmanship with the aid of another immortal, a wizard who soon loses his head to a scenery-chewing Mario Van Peebles. The ebb and flow of warring energies cause the wizard's cave to close in on itself, sealing the evil Peebles inside a mountain for four centuries. Flash to the present: Peebles escapes his rocky prison and immediately goes in search of the lethargic Lambert. Though shot on location in Canada, France, Morocco, and Scotland, this has all the production value of a student film. Under the helm of music-video director Andy Morahan, the movie is jumpy and jumbled, leaping from one ridiculous scene to another. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Reviews:
Best HL "sequel" yet, falls short of Series This movie came out in when I was about 13 and a huge fan of Highlander: The Series and the original movie that spawned the entire franchise. History, swordplay, martial arts, philosophy, and good principal actors. To this day I have fond memories of being entertained by the HL franchise.
Endgame is the third of four sequels to the original movie, none of which can truly be called sequels. Highlander II: The Quickening betrays the premise of the original movie, Highlander III: The Sorcerer returns to the premise but ignores the Series (which ignores the events of the original movie, but not the premise), aside from being a mediocre imitation of the original. The Series, on the other hand, is where the whole franchise reaches its zenith and, in my opinion, surpasses the original film in scope, with a rich mythos and a world of interesting characters.
Endgame doesn't reach the heights of the best of the series, but isn't as bad as its worst episodes. All in all, it can be seen as a high budget, feature length episode of the series. Thematically, everything in the movie (besides a storyline featuring Connor) has been played out more or less in the series. The flashbacks are convincing but, again, not nearly as compelling as the best of the series. The story arch and mythos could only be appreciated by fans of the franchise, so by itself it has little strength.
The movie also falls short of its own potential; the original script and alternate cuts reveal a somewhat different movie.
By itself, it is far better than many sci-fi cult movies, but the best of Highlander is the best of the series. If Davis and Panzer ever wish to make a feature film that rivals the series, somebody needs to seriously reflect on what made the franchise successful in the first place.
The DVD itself is high quality and highly entertaining, though. It includes an entire alternate cut and interesting production features. The soundtrack is also quite good--I made a point of re-purchasing it this year after losing my original copy. Please, STOP Writing about Endgame, this movie is NOT that one! Okay first off, this movie is NOT the endgame one where connor and duncan arein it together, this is the one where the original highlander and his son are in it. the mongol guy, Caine, (Mario Van Peebles), breaks his katena, blah blah. do just a LITTLE research, GAWD. a movie destined to be a classic Highlander - The Final Dimension is such a great movie that I can and do watch it over and over.
Well done, great acting and worth owning Duncan at his worst Duncan at is worst day. killing or be killed. is this movie!!
I'd say. I love highlander the series. and if Duncan did his best would of wacked this clown kell right away. no point about it. duncan is the best!
no matter how many immortals he has killed 157 kills for Duncan. ha
there were sure more than that in series. but maybe not but still, Duncan would of won anyhow. his bad guy Kell, is not that powerful. Duncan is the winner and we shall still await for real ending from the series.
here is my ending for the series. I have submitted my ending to Davis Panzar
here its is. if anyones interested in my ending.. How highlander the series should end!
and my title ending..
Title suggestions:
Final endgame:
Highlander the series finale
Our story should open as talking back in end of 6th series where Duncan is talking about life changes everyday.
To Amanda saying l do Love you (from ending Not to be)
Then we go to Kenny which we left immortal he should be looking for food and trying to get through life then comes along Cassandra and he try's to take her head she gets mad and takes his.
Then as Joe Dawson finds out later on about this talking to Duncan as always, Amanda overhears this and runs off to find Cassandra.
She Runs into Methos. Then as there talking, Cassandra comes along to try to kill Methos. Amanda steps in to defend Methos they argue she beats him up. And goes to battle Cassandra.
She loses, Cassandra then moves on to talk to Duncan but runs into Methos and finds out she killed Amanda. So they battle and Methos wins after long battle. Then Joe will come along and find all this out at watcher headquarters and then goes to talk to Mac again.
Mac goes on the hunt. Searches for Methos to kill!
Will be along search because Methos is going into hiding because he knows Mac is coming to take his head.
When Mac finds Methos it would be great to be on a bridge.
(Started on a bridge end with a bridge)
Then of course Duncan will win and then after there would be a beam of light that sends him into space and time where he's the champion of all immortals.
This would be the final highlander of all time and lots of people would love it. Would be a monumental ending for highlander.
The Best Movie That Should Never Have Been Made ... What do you do when you have an opportunity to make a sequel to a mvie with a completely closed ending? Make it anyways. At the end of the original Highlander movie, Connor MacLeod had defeated the last of the immortals. He could grow old and die. He could have children. The power of all then immortals in a single mind allowed him to know the thoughts of others and help make the world a better place.
Oops! Wait! There are still immortals alive, hidden in seclusion on holy ground. Connor only THOUGHT that he had won the prize. And thus, with a blatant attempt at explaining away something that had already happened, the producers opened to door to another Highlander movie.
This movie does have some redeeming qualities. Deborah Unger is the first. Amazingly sexy and paired well with Christopher Lambert, This movie is worth buying because she is in it. Another such redeeming quality is the sequence where Connor returns to the Highlands to find the strength and inspiration to go on. Backed by the amazing music of Loreena McKennitt, this part of the movie almost redeems the whole. |
