Reviews:
Lively multiplication DVD If you want an update to Schoolhouse Rock, this DVD is a good one, and one of the few choices available. Multiplication facts for each number through 12 are in songs. These are sung by children and two adults as they "travel around the world" (via green screen and superimposed photos and videos of international locations). The puppets, who sing and tell jokes, are the best and funniest and like Muppets characters. I was hoping that the music would present the multiplication in a slightly more catchy style. This would be good in a classroom setting and important for public libraries to have in kids' DVD sections. I like the Googol Power website, which was why I purchased this. Still, it is a little goofy, but maybe that's ok for the audience of first through fifth graders. Googol Power: Multiplication Vacation DVD It is a good introduction for beginners up through second grade. The various locations that they go to was a nice touch and made it more interesting. Additional hints or tips on memorizing the multiplication facts would have been helpful. not bad for a bunch of old hippies and their puppets I am using this with a teen who has moderate developmental disabilities. She has always had great difficulty with numbers and any type of math. She loves this video. She immediately started singing and dancing with the video, and a week later was remembering all the songs, including the multiplication facts in the songs. She is now able to participate in her math class at school!
The video is divided into sections, one for each number (0s, 1s, 2s, etc.). There is a theme for each number and additional geographic or cultural info within each segement. For example, 0s are in space. From the DVD menu, you can select which number fact you want to begin with so that you can just watch a number or two at a time. The songs are sung by aging-hippie-looking people (like the long-haired guy with the tie-dyed shirt), accompanied by strange-looking puppets called googols, and a small group of young children.
My first reaction on previewing the DVD was, "How cheesy!" The young lady I purchased it for, however, was fascinated and immediately captivated. I don't know if it was her enthusiasm or just that these characters grow on you, but I am now hooked, and love watching the video with her and singing along.
Bottom line: while a bit on the silly side, the songs are catchy, the characters are addicting, and it does what it says it will do. I now wish they would come out with DVDs for addition and subtraction! Multiplication Made For Entertaining This DVD is great, not only for Multiplication, but Science, Art, History, Space, Music Etc! Everyday we start with the introduction and end with Leonardo da Vinci. It's fun for all ages. Anyone who watches it will learn something new. The music is great and the format is excellent! My son really enjoys it! I would recommend this for all families and teachers. Keep up the good work! Math can be FUN! My daughter hates math. This DVD has helped her to learn multiplication facts in a fun way. Instead of the "drill and kill" method we have watched this DVD and she can remember the facts much better. She is more of a visual/tactile learner. Any time I can present information so that she can see it or touch it she will remember it better. The DVD also includes great information about other people and places in the world. It really is fun. We also bought the audio cd for additon facts but it is not nearly as fun as watching the Googols and seeing all the wonderful places they go in Multiplication Vacation. I hope other titles (in video) will be available soon! |
