Maurice Jarre: A Tribute to David Lean

Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
Milan Records is proud to announce the release of a special edition of Maurice Jarre s tribute concert to David Lean. Recorded live at the Barbican Center (London, 1992) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, this edition includes a full audio commentary of the concert by conductor/composer Maurice Jarre himself.Maurice Jarre shares with the viewer the very complex techniques of how to synchronize the music of a full orchestra with the film s footage. During the concert itself, excerpts of the films were projected on a screen behind the orchestra. Jarre talks about his task to keep an eye on the orchestra, the big chronometer in front of him, and the projected film excerpts in order to have the music match the footage. The only difference from a recording session in Hollywood is that in this case he only had one take.Maurice Jarre also shares many anecdotes about the different films he worked on with David Lean. He mentionshis experience on Lawrence of Arabia having to replace the original composer and deliver a film score within a very short period of time. On Doctor Zhivago, he had to conduct a full orchestra and 35 balalaika playerswho couldn t read musical scores. On a more humorous note, he also mentions a recording session in Los Angeles where his entire orchestra slowed down and eventually stopped playing after having spotted Sophia Loren in the technician s booth. During the hour-long audio commentary, Maurice Jarre shares these and many more stories and insights about his career, his work with Sir David Lean and his tribute concert to the filmmaker. The DVD also contains an exclusive 35-minute interview of Maurice Jarre by Christian Lauliac. Also included in the package is the soundtrack to this wonderful concert.DVD Content:(Full Concert Video)1. Remembrance2. Ryan s Daughter Suite3. A Passage to India4. Doctor Zhivago5. Offering6. There's no getting around a simple, basic truth: watching Lawrence of Arabia in any home-video format represents a compromise. There's no better way to appreciate this epic biographical adventure than to see it projected in 70 millimeter onto a huge theater screen. That caveat as...

Reviews:

Simply the best
Along with John Williams, Basil Poledouris, Jerry Goldsmith and Howard Shore, Maurice Jarre is what we have the best in movie music. A spectacular dvd. Must have.

Maurice Jarre
I bought the Maurice Jarre as a christmas present for my father in law as he said he wanted the music to Lawrence of Arabia.Untill i started searching for it i did not know that Maurice Jarre did this but then started searching for some live footage of the orchestra and was finding nothing in Australia but Amazon had the David lean tribute and quite a lot of other tunes too so it was well worth it and it came with dvd and cd and the quality is superb. I look forward to shopping further at Amazon.

Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago are unforgettable
This is an unbelievably emotional concert. You can almost feel Maurice Jarre's heartbeat and definitely hear it at the end when he takes the mic. It's great to have images of these fantastic films mixed with live footage of the orchestra playing. The commentary track of Maurice Jarre is full of insights, and anecdotes. The guy has so many funny stories to tell! It's a must have for every Lean / Jarre fan...
