Alkaline Trio It's been 11 years since Alkaline Trio released their first full-length album, Goddamnit. In that time, they've toured the world, sold over a million records, and expanded their sound radically beyond their original straight-ahead punk style, incorporating production slick enough to earn them mass exposure on outlets like MTV's The Hills. Now with This Addiction, their seventh album and first for Epitaph, the Chicago rockers are heading back to their roots. This deluxe version a DVD of Alkaline Trio live at the House of Blues, Las Vegas 2008, and 6 additional bonus tracks.

Reviews:

*sigh*
Short review: Waste of money. Go out and buy Goddamnit, Maybe I'll Catch Fire, From Here to Infirmary, Good Mourning, Alkaline Trio, or Remains. If you already have them, buy them again and cherish the times when Alkaline Trio was amazing. I'm a huge fan, and want to like it, but they just don't have it anymore. Maybe someday they'll come back and write something impressive. Long review: What happened to Alkaline Trio?! Not that this is some kind of sudden change in music, they've definitely been going downhill for quite a while now, but I expected something a little better than this. The album starts off with "This Addiction" and sounds promising, the intro into the songs is definitely a bit of a reminder of old Trio, but once the chorus comes in, it just sounds terrible... Matt has given up on his defining raspy vocals and tried out his new clean ones, which really just don't do it for me, not to mention the horrible lyrics. Next comes "Dine, Dine My Darling" which is a bit more enjoyable than the single. Maybe it's just because I don't have to listen to Skiba's voice anymore, but rather get to hear Dan's. While there isn't much to this song (not that there's ever much to their songs), it's pretty catchy. "Lead Poisoning" is yet another one with terrible lyrics and horrible vocals to along with it. We also get to hear some interesting trumpet parts, and while it seems cool at first, it's ruined by the rest of the song. And then we have the song with the complete rip off of a Kelly Clarkson riff! At least they picked a catchy one to copy. But all in all, "Dead on the Floor" isn't too bad. Matt just needs to keep his vocals in a lower key like in this song, because when he hits those higher notes, it's just awful. Then comes a song with a perfect example of his crappy high notes. "The American Scream" has the same flaws of the others (bad lyrics, bad vocals), and it's not even catchy. As much as I like Dan's vocals, his lyrics in "Off The Map" aren't the greatest, mainly the first few lines. This one's not too bad though. "Draculina" ...ew. Terrible. Nothing more to say. Cue the '80s synth. "Eating Me Alive" isn't very good either. And Skiba now sounds awkward cussing, there just doesn't seem to be any emotion behind these lyrics. Same complaint as everything else on "Piss and Vinegar." "Dorothy" sounds somewhat darker than the rest of the album, but definitely doesn't make it any better. Just another average song on this sad excuse for an Alkaline Trio album. Well, at least the album ends with a great song. "Fine" is a pretty great song. Dan sings, which already makes up for Skiba's vocals, the lyrics are still sub par, but I'll get over it since Andriano isn't writing lyrics like "Draculina." The two new electric bonus tracks are a bit better than the rest of the album, but nothing worth paying extra for. As for the acoustic, you're not missing out on anything at all because the electric versions are much better, and they're already crap, with the exception of "Fine" which is still a pretty solid song. In all, it's really not worth the extra money for the bonus, or for the album at all, but if you're a dedicated Trio fan like me, you're of course going to buy it anyway, despite the fact it sucks. I tried to like it! I swear I did! It's just bad...

Great listen and value
The bonus songs and DVD make this item a great value. The quality of the music and the cathiness of Alakline Trio's latest material sets it over the top and makes the CD a must have.

OK but plays out quickly ...
I enjoy this album like I enjoy all Alk3 albums but it is lacking in unique music, interesting lyrics and harder rock songs. When you hear the intro to the first track, you get chills because it's totally throw back to the old raw trio. However, after a few listens you realize the lyrics and hooks aren't interesting enough to hold your attention for months and the music is actually just a cheapen version of Mr. Chainsaw - but with less dynamic changes. Anyway, I understand that some people may like this album more that others. That's cool with me. Everyone has their own tastes. To get a better idea if you would find this review helpful, I've ranked the Alk3 albums from my most to least favorite (1 being most) and provided my top 5 (or 6) all time Alk3 songs. If you disagree with both of these lists, ignore this review completely. 1. From Here to Infirmary (2001) 2. Alkaline Trio (2000) 3. Goddamnit (1998) 4. Agony & Irony (2008) 5. Maybe I'll Catch Fire (2000) 6. Good Mourning (2003) 7. This Addiction (2010) 8. Crimson (2005) 1. Mr. Chainsaw 2. '97 3. All On Black 4. Jaked on Green Beers 5. I Lied My Face Off / Hating Every Minute

Back To The Best
Much improved release to previous effort, Agony and Irony. I was fortunate to catch the tour a few weeks after release. Aside from some sound issues, a great performance and solid support to the album. This is truly one of the few bands currently doing anything of any meaning. Each and every song on this album are well worth the listen. With the switch to Epitaph, I would highly recommend if you are on the fence for some reason with these guys.

Alkaline Trio are back and finally get their big break!!
It's about BLEEPing time the Alkaline Trio got a major label contract and released an album on it. Although it's not what I expected (vampires and goth-ness), it's a truly scary album and is so goth it'll send shivers down your spine and turn you into those black-haired zombies. Best tracks are "The American Scream," which rocks like a dark hurricane. Another cool track is "Draculina," which is supposedly is a vampiress thats BLEEPable for men. This album is pretty good. Although Alkaline Trio can do WAY better.
