Only by the Night

Despite a wave of criticism asserting that Kings of Leon's fourth full-length is "too commercial," Only by the Night may be the closest thing to a pitch-perfect album to drop in 2008. Granted, Tennessee's band of brothers (and one first cousin) takes a turn for the heavily polish...

Narrow Stairs

Narrow Stairs might be the first album recorded by Death Cab for Cutie since Ben Gibbard's former solo project went unexpectedly stratospheric, but Gibbard hasn't let it go to his head. Oh, OK, maybe a little: lead-off single "I Will Possess Your Heart" is an eight minute jam tha...

A Hundred Million Suns

The Snow Patrol we meet on A Hundred Million Suns is a band facing the same dilemma that Coldplay met on 2008’s Viva la Vida; having conquered the world with a rousing, melancholy brand of MOR indie, where now? On the surface, A Hundred Million Suns seems to suggest, nothin...

Reviews:

Good music, f'in terrible recording
As title says, and other poster posted, the music is great, very passionate and moving, but the sound quality sucks!!! My wife who has great hearing says she likes the youtube version better (as compared to way too expensive hi-fi). That tells you something about the SQ. I think the sound quality of the first 6 tracks ranks up there with Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bullocks...(on CD) as among the worst 10 in my 2,500+ collection. Sounds like it was engineered for youtube played through laptop speakers. Don't believe me, take a look at the waveform with an audio editor. Music like this is the reason why kids think mp3s sound as good as the CD... Well yeah they do if the CD was engineered this bad to begin with. Going back to the content. Hard to say anything bad. Just a great rock group with heart and ability to play. Drummer spanks. Violinist isn't a gimmick but offers true depth and emotion to music.

a great album!
This is one of my favorite new albums. The instrumentation (in particular, Sometime Around Midnight and Innocence) is strong and evocative, reminiscent of old-school big-stadium-style U2. Papillon, Does This Mean You're Moving On, and This is Nowhere have the same kind of urban cool-attitude music a la Franz Ferdinand. Gasoline, Happiness is Overrated, and Something New are catchy rock numbers. This is a strong collection of songs - there's not a single crappy track in this CD. The lyrics are this band's only weakness, but that is easily overlooked by the great songwriting.

Single is great, but its the best song on the album
Bought the album based on Sometime Around Midnight, which I love. If all the songs could convey the feelings and emotions the single does it would be a great album, but its just not there. Before buying I listened to the quick sound clips here on Amazon and thought I'd like it, but its not doing it for me.

Great Music... Not a great recording though
As others have stated, this is a very good CD from beginning to end. If you are a fan of the song "Sometime Around Midnight", you'll enjoy other tracks as well. For me, I was instantly drawn into "Sometime Around Midnight" the first time I heard it on the radio... I loved the lead singer's voice and the fact there is no chorus. Many of the other songs highlight both of these characteristics as well. Two of my favorites include "Wishing Well" and "Missy" The only downside (and this is a big one for me)... is the horrible sound quality. From the opening track about 38 seconds in I knew the sound quality was going to disappoint. Too bad... it's some great tunage.

Surpasses Expectations
I also heard Airborne Toxic Event's "Sometime Around Midnight" on XM and started looking more into the band on youtube. After hearing a couple of their songs, I ordered their CD on amazon. I am sooo glad I did! Normally you buy a CD and you like one or two songs, but this CD is different. Every song is great. The lyrics are brilliant. They sound similar to the Killers. The way they incorporate the violen into some of their music is genious. I love that there is a new band out there to get excited about that sounds similar to the music I like, but with their own unique style that seperates them from the rest. I don't have enough good things to say about this group. Love it!!!
