Reviews:
This fan's still dancing Here's more of what I've grown to love about Sam's music. Songs that grow on you; that take on deeper shades of meaning with repeated listening. And a couple of absolute gems like "Sister Rosetta" and "Signal". I'd love to see Sam do a rocker now that the trilogy is complete. Part 3 of the 'Minimalistic Trilogy' is very good! This release is sooo much better than Boot/Shoe!! Don't Do Anything is one of the most solid releases Sam has ever created. The mood is very rock/alt/indie - which is a very good sound for her.
All these songs just beg for repeat listens. I'm really stuck on "Little Plastic Life", "Don't Do Anything", and "My Career in Chemistry". "Sister Rosetta" and "Flowers Up" are also good. "Watching Out of This World" and "Under the Night" are very powerful listening to them while sitting in the dark. (I know, I'm weird! LOL!). "Another Song" reminds me so much of classic Paul McCartney - even the background vocals. Oh, and I absolutely love the new rendition of "Black Sky".
Of these past three releases, this is definitely my favorite of the three, with Fan Dance a close 2nd and Boot/Shoe a distant 3rd. Even though I have enjoyed this 'Minimalistic Trilogy', I do hope that Sam kicks the music up a few notches with the next release. Dark Flowers of Soul Haunting kaleidoscope of music, a carnival left town, an empty soul full of sound.
"I hear the music up above my head"
Picked it up, can't put it down, "no explanations", "can't come down".
Thank you Sam! This is a beautiful gem. Acquiring a taste for Sam Phillips I like to eat food that fights back - something good and crunchy to chew on. I feel the same way about music. I want something I can listen to over and over - something that grows the more you listen. Don't Do Anything is that kind of music. The production sounds both new and old at the same time - the drums are BIG (or silent), the guitars brown and warm. Sam has chosen to sing beautifully - the harmonies exquisite - the lyrics evocative, poetic, mysterious, ironic, intelligent. I guess you can tell I really like this album. Great Job! The highly anticipated new release is received with much enthusiasm! A few of the songs are definitely mellow, but there's still quite a bit of variety throughout the album. I especially love "Sister Rosetta" and "My Career in Chemistry". And the rest is growing on me! I think she did a great job - a good production. And it doesn't sound just like the last two - I think it's quite different - except maybe the song "Don't Do Anything".
Great Job, Sam! I remain a huge fan and look forward to your next endeavor. |
