When You Lie Next to Me

Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
Newcomer Kellie Coffey arrives in Nashville not straight from her Oklahoma home, but via Los Angeles, where she scored a number of jobs singing background for Disneyland, network television, and Barbra Streisand’s millennium album and Las Vegas show. It’s no surprise, then, that she chose a pop producer, Dann Huff, for her debut CD, which is marketed as a country album but has little more than the occasional twang of pedal steel guitar to make it so. This is a big, layered, usually overproduced effort, made memorable by Coffey’s Trisha Yearwood-like vocals and her impressive songwriting. "When You Lie Next to Me," the title ballad, boasts a strong lyric about appreciating the intimacy of a lover and respecting the fragility of life. Like others of her songs, particularly "At the End of the Day" and "Outside Looking In," a duet with Lonestar’s Richie McDonald, "When You Lie Next to Me" has a kind of integrity that cuts through the gloppy production and remains something special. Here’s hoping that Coffey, something special herself, can keep her head above the muck. --Alanna Nash

Reviews:

Simply Kellie
I was introduced to Kellie Coffey's music by a friend and I have heard some of her music that was played on a soap opera over 1 year ago. My favorite songs from this cd is: When you lie next to me and I just knew and Outside looking in. She reminds me of a voice like Celine.

A Powerful, Moving Debut
Kellie Coffey's voice is a rich, powerful alto she uses to deliver this material with passion and conviction, material which too often lapses into an unoriginal pop formula. I don't really get the Celine Dion comparison, although "Whatever It Takes" has a Celine-like style to it. I believe the Trisha Yearwood or Wynonna comparisons to be more accurate, maybe a little Faith Hill also. The title track come close to Faith's "Breathe," although Kellie's tone is throatier than Faith's. This music is not truly country, but she fits the new mold of female vocalists, and this overdone pop production is common in country today also. What's best about this CD? I love the old-time country message of "Fingerprints;" its delivered with conviction reminicient of Tammy Wynette. I love the rollicking beat of "Blue Skies," and the CD's duet, "Outside Looking In" is a touching story with a passionate, moving delivery by the vocalists. Kellie's writing is impressive much like her voice. I only wish this record displayed more raw emotion; that is necessary in true country. The best aspect of this record Kellie's powerful voice, and her ability to make the lyrics credible or believable. She can be rousing as well as sensitive. This material is just too familiar already.

A Great Recording
Many of the songs on this album appear to be inspired or influenced by other contemporary or recent country recordings: ( When You Lie Next = Faith Hills Breathe, Holly Dunn did a prior song called Why Wyoming and Bluer Skies is really Heads Carolina, Tails California redone.) None of that matters. This is a very good CD by a very good singer who makes the most of the material. On The Outside Looking In is a flat out great song and the one that sends chills up your spine. Buy this CD - I bought it and my kids and wife listen to it all the time - first cut to last.

Way better than Celine Dion
I knew her debut single, "When you lie next to me" was good, but to have every song a winner was a pleasant surprise. She has one of the best female voices out there in any style of music. Definitely worth purchasing this one. five stars all the way. Wish there was another album coming out by her.

What A CD
I got to say this is the best cd i have heard in years. Every song on the cd is great.
