      Esperanza

Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
"Esperanza," bassist/vocalist/composer Esperanza Spalding's debut on Heads Up International, is set for worldwide release on May 20, 2008. Armed with uncanny instrumental chops, a siren voice that spans three languages, and composing and arranging skills that weave together the best elements of the old-school with the progressive, this 23-year-old has crafted a debut album that takes a completely fresh and refreshing approach to jazz by borrowing from the rich traditions of soul, pop, world music and so much more. Esperanza is joined in the studio by a crew of A-list session players, including flamenco guitar virtuoso Niño Josele, percussionist Jamey Haddad, drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernández, saxophonist Donald Harrison and several other seasoned talents - all of whom collectively serve as further evidence of the kind of creative energy and magnetism that she radiates.

Reviews:

The Real Deal
There's no way anyone who catches Esperanza in performance can complain about not getting their money's worth. She's virtually singing during the greater part of her lengthy sets while at the same time busting loose the strings with her strong and resonant tones on acoustic bass. Regrettably, the rare but beautiful standard that she performed at Newport--"Wild Is the Wind"--is not one of the selections on this album, because on it she climaxes on a coloratura high Bb that's so rich and resonant it still rings in memory. At other times, the voice is alternately passionate and powerful, thin and slightly hoarse, but its sincerity is nothing if it's not winsome. Is she a great bassist? A power player like Mingus or a virtuoso like Scott LaFaro? Not yet, but the prize seems within her possession. Is she an unselfish, dependable time-keeper like Ray Brown or Sam Jones or Doug Watkins? That's a tough question to answer--perhaps no less so for Esperanza than for any bassist (including Mingus) who is also a leader. Listening to a first-class walker lock in tight with the hi-hat and proceed to stay in the pocket for the next several thousand beats can be one of the revelatory joys of following this music. But it does require a player who's less of a headliner than a source of constant support and service. At this point in her career, Esperanza has the enormous energies not to mention talent to command total attention and respect with either her vocal or instrumental talents. I don't have the sense that the two have welded a tight relationship as yet--certainly not the sort of arco bass + singing voice that characterized the playing of Slam Stewart or Major Holley. But with chops like hers, for the present it's sufficient--and refreshing--simply to hear her play her heart out at practically every opportunity. There are no poses, no posturings, no calculated show biz schtick. She's unmistakably real, unguarded, forthcoming with her gift--and the listener, soon sensing that quality, can't help but respond with gratitude and pleasure.

An Amazing First Effort by Esperanza Spaulding
I was first introduced to the name Esperanza Spaulding while reading an Ebony Magazine; she was showcased in the New Artist section. After reading about what she had to offer, I decided to go to the store and take a chance on her. Boy, was I surprised to find out how truly gifted she is. Everything about her CD keeps me listening to it. First of all, her jazz fusion interpretation is unlike anything I've heard. She's a throwback to originality. I absolutely love how some of her songs are done in a different language; it is sexy, breath-taking and intoxicating. Her voice is "breathy" and whispered at times. Just unlike anything I've heard. It doesn't matter whether you're in your car, holding a dinner party or cleaning the house, this CD is something that should be in rotation in your changer. 5 Stars (at least)....

Refreshingly Talented!
Ms. Esperanza Spalding's voice is a sweet and smooth treat. Her lyrics and melodies are thoughtful and delightful. "I Know You Know" is definitely one of my FAVORITES, and I LOVE the way she slides into the groove on "Samba Empreludio"... ofcourse, it doesn't hurt that she is SO easy on the eyes! ENJOY

Esperanza rocks !
She is such a wonderful artist, I'm a rock and roll fan and yet with more eclectic tastes I love the artistry of superb players no matter what genre. Esperanza is such an artist, on an instrument usually found in the background she shines like no other fabulous music all around !

A great talent!
I discovered a new artistic voice when I ushered her show in Austin. Esparanza is AWESOME and I have been thoroughly enjoying her music and talent on this album. I'm looking forward to the next one.
